As part of its consumer empowerment efforts, the Department of Trade and Industry Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Office is undertaking the project called consumer advocacy training of trainers (CATT).

The project, according to Engr. Noel R. Bazan, DTI-ZDN provincial director, aims to create a local pool of resource persons who can work side by side with the DTI in its  information dissemination and advocacy campaigns on fair trade laws, consumer rights, and other consumer related matters.

“We see the need to develop consumer advocacy trainers coming from DTI- accredited consumer organizations because we want to intensify awareness on consumerism. With only three personnel handling consumer welfare for the whole province, you will realize that the office can only do so much and so we need capacitated willing partners to become DTI’s force multipliers so that, together, we may be able to reach and serve more consumers”, Bazan said

The Dipolog Consumer Watch Group, Inc. (DCWGI) under its president, Mr. Michael Malacca, has partnered with the DTI on this CATT project according to Bazan. Initial series of seminars were conducted for select members of DCWGI. These were done during Saturdays so that they will not in any way affect the delivery of DTI services during weekdays.

“The Saturday seminar series will go on probably till end of September this year. By then, we expect the trainees to have mastered their respective topics in time for the conduct of intensified information campaign in schools and barangays during the National Consumers Month in October,” Bazan added.. — LSV-DTI-9
