ARMM builds fisheries research and dev’t center Tawi-Tawi PDF Print E-mail

BONGAO, Tawi-Tawi — The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) is building a Regional Fisheries Integrated Research and Development Center (RFIRDC) in this province.

ARMM Gov. Mujiv Hataman said this in an interview at the sideline of the 1st ARMM International Business Conference the RFIRDC project is aimed to improve the quality and production of the fishery industry here.

The business conference reeled off Tuesday and will end Wednesday with more than 500 local and foreign business as well as tourism stakeholders in attendance.

It is anchored on the theme: “Strengthening Public-Private Partnership towards economic stability in ARMM.”

Hataman noted that this province is very rich in marine resources and is the number one producer of seaweed in the region.

Hataman said this province contributes 48 percent representing 294,595 metric tons of seaweed to the total product of the entire ARMM.

The ARMM comprises of the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao and Sulu aside from this province.

Hataman said the project will be undertaken through the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in close coordination with the national government.

“Lahat ng kinausap namin ang sinasabi nila the problem is processing and the way I see it the research institute must be established here as almost 50 percent of the seaweed come from this province,” he added. — TPG
