ISABELA CITY, Basilan – The city government here and the City Nutrition Council (CNC) have lined up activities for the observance of the annual Nutrition Month celebration this month.

CNC members have convened recently and tackled the proposed programs of activities for this year’s Nutrition Month, which has for its theme, “Kalamidad Paghandaan, Gutom at Malnutrisyon Agapan.”

The CNC endorsed the activities, to include Buntis Assembly on July 23, barangay level information dissemination on Family Disaster Preparedness and Proper Nutrition from July 10 to 29, barangay assembly on pinoy health agenda Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 and Family Disaster Preparedness on July 2, among others.

There will also be a distribution of mosquito nets and family disaster preparedness advocacy in Lumbang Barangay on July 12.

The CNC also requested the local radio station DXNO-FM Radyo Komunidad to regularly plug nutrition related advocacies in the whole month of July. Likewise, DXNO was also requested to document with PIA the Gulayan sa Paaralan program implementation.

Every year the different schools under the city schools division are also active participants in the observance of Nutrition Month with various activities promoting consciousness among children and youth on nutrition and health.

Nurse Mary Joy R. Luzon of the Department of Education (DepEd)-Isabela City Division revealed that initial data gathered from the different schools have shown that more than 800 children were recorded as severely wasted (malnourished children).

Luzon, however revealed that they were surprised at the dramatic increase in the number of malnourished children in some of the elementary schools, which had very low incidence of severely wasted children in the past years.

Doubtful of the survey, the division has ordered the school nurses to a re-evaluation and re-weighing of the children. The results have generated lower incidence and Luzon suspected that the defective weighing scale was partly contributory to the disparity in the data.

Luzon said the final data will still be collated before the DepEd could come up with the real score.

Meanwhile, the CNC has deferred to August the implementation of the supplemental feeding program for pre-school children up to Grade VI in respect of the observance of fasting period of Ramadan among Muslims.

The CNC has agreed to give priority to schools with high incidence of malnourished children, and City DepEd identified Tampalan School, Badjao Floating School, Carbon and Latuan Elementary schools as being consistent with incidence of malnourished children.

The culmination activity is set on July 30 with agriculture booth display, jingle contest, and search for Mr. and Ms. Veggie 2014.
