The Zamboanga Hermosa TB Council, a multi-sectoral group tasked to look into measures on how to prevent and control the spread of tuberculosis, is now setting the stage for activities to fittingly observe Lung Month in August.

An Anti-TB fun run, set on August 24 at 5am is expected to be the highlight of the month-long celebration of Lung Month. It will be a joint effort with the Rotary Club of Zamboanga. Tentatively, activity will kick off with a zumba warm-up at the Western Mindanao State University grounds, after which the fun run will proceed to the    Paseo del Mar passing through the main thoroughfares of the city.

The program to be marked by a Jingle Singing contest will be held at the Centro Latino.

Earlier in August, the Department of Health will also hold a TB Summit for all stakeholders while the City Health Office in coordination with the Anti-TB Task Force and other sponsoring agencies will also intensify case finding activities by health districts.

The Zamboanga Hermosa TB Council is chaired by Mayor Beng Climaco and co-chaired by City Health Officer Dr. Rodel Agbulos.

The country’s official gazette states that the Lung Month observance aims to focus the public’s attention to the pulmonary system and illnesses of the lungs and urge everyone to contribute to a better and healthier environment so that the chemical exchange that takes place in the lungs and detoxifies the body is sustained.

The observance of Lung Month in August is in commemoration of the birthday of Commonwealth President Manuel Quezon (August 19, 1878). Quezon suffered from tuberculosis and spent his last years in a cure cottage in New York where he died August 1, 1944.  (Sheila Covarrubias)
