The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said at least P49 million is initially needed to put up a Philippines Science High School (PSHS) here in the region.

This was disclosed by DOST Assistant Regional Director for Administrative Support and Technical Services Martin Wee citing the P49 million is for the construction and expenses in the first year of operation of the PSHS.

Wee said among the building and facilities to be constructed is an academic building, a dormitory, and a laboratory.

Wee said the funding will come from the DOST, which will manage the PSHS.

An evaluation team headed by DOST Undersecretary Fortunato Dela Peña has already inspected last week the two proposed sites where to establish the PSHS here.

One of the proposed site is at the Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone and Freeport (Zamboecozone) in Barangay Talisayan, this city and in Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur.

In the entire country, the regions that do not have PSHS are Zamboanga Peninsula, Calabarzon and Mimaropa.

Wee said there is a need to establish PSHS to boost the science and technology sector in the region. — TPG
