An initial school feeding program was conducted at Barangay Lanzones, Zamboanga City recently. The 24 grade schoolers were assessed with moderate and acute cases of malnutrition by the local counterparts of the Department of Health – National Nutrition Council (DOH-NNC).

Partnering with the Department of Education (DepED), the Multiplier Poultry Farm Project (MPFP) of the Department of Agriculture (DA) through its benefactors identified Lanzones Elementary School as the “adopted school” for the MPFP program. “The malnourished children will be fed from the eggs of the chicken given to benefactors. Ideally, the feeding would be two or three times a week for one school year. But if the benefactors may opt to add to the schedule, it would be welcomed. We promote the importance of agriculture through livestock – poultry raising, and by that, we create awareness that good health comes with practice of good and proper nutrition.” said AnnabelleB. Madrazo, MPFP regional coordinator.

The two benefactors were Jose M. Eijansantos and Polly Lloyd E. Oana. Both received the multiplier poultry farm project consisting of 22 heads free-range chicken and an incubator. Eijansantos and Oana in their memorandum of agreement with the DA, DEPED, DOH-NNC, and Office of the City Veterinarian would be working closely with Lanzones Elem. School’s administration for the feeding activities. “Tomorrow, we will conduct a deworming for identified pupils. This activity is in coordination with the district nurse Mericia A. Hussin.” Oana said.

According to the school principal, Celia R. Sosas their elementary school was very glad and excited to receive the notice to be the adopted school for the feeding program. “This is the first time that the children will experience this kind of support and activity. We are so happy for this opportunity given to us. We hope that the parents who are also present in today’s activity would also realize the importance of good nutrition for the children especially now that is nutrition month.” she said.

The MOA was signed between the benefactor and the partner agencies sealing their trust for the success of the MPFP. This was witnessed by the Barangay Chair and Barangay Council of Lanzones and the rest of the school administration.

DA as represented by the Assistant Regional Director Engr. Peter M. Andalahao said that, “this year’s Nutrition Month theme “KalamidadPaghandaan: Gutom at MalnutrisyonAgapan reminds us to not just have available food on the table, but have a nutritious and safe to eat foods. The DA’s goal to food production is achieved together with our different partners. Our partnership with NNC is also important because they ensure cleanliness and nutritious variety of foods to eat everyday to keep us healthy.” Andalahao said. He was also grateful to the benefactors for supporting the DA and the MPFP under the Livestock program and to the school who welcomed the DA program.

Meanwhile, a similar feeding program and poultry farm visits were also conducted in Molave, Zamboanga del Sur and in Polanco, Zamboanga del Norte.

Madrazo said that the benefactors in Molave, not only selected a school to feed but also identified the Feed the Elders, in their activity.
