ZCHS @ 69, still soaring high PDF Print E-mail

Zamboanga City High School celebrated its 69th Foundation Day  and Alumni Homecoming last August 18 to 29 with the theme, “ City High, Soaring high @ 69” spearheaded by the Zamboanga City High School Faculty and Staff with their new principal Mr. Jesus C. Solon and the Zamboanga City High School Alumni Association headed by its President, Mr. Pacifico C. Dela Cruz.

The week-long celebration was ushered in by the Noche de Asalto last August 18, 2014 hosted by this year’s Silver Jubilarians, Batch 1989. This was capped by the Torch Parade on August 22, 2014 which started from the former ZCHS campus in Pettit Barracks to the new ZCHS campus in Tetuan  participated in by at least 44 batches from 1959 to 2006, surpassing last year’s 41 batches. Various friendly competition were conducted like the Horror Costume Competition, Biggest Group, Colorful Group and Best Alumni Batch T-shirt Design. Meanwhile, nightly affairs dubbed “Canciones Y Bailes” hosted by different batches added gaiety to the celebration.

On August 24, 2014, the ZCHSAA hosted the 6th Grand Fiesta 2014 at the Golf Country Club and Beach Resort, which started with a Motorcade from the  ZCHS Campus @ 8am. El Pescador was the theme of the activity.

Then, on August 28, 2014, Foundation Day, a Thanksgiving Mass was offered by the school, followed by an Honor Ceremony for this year’s Jubilarians and Honorees headed by the Class of 1959, Golden Jubilarians,(Batch President Dr. Ernesto U. Domingo), and the Class of 1989, Silver Jubilarians (Batch President Ms. Ma. Jerlina S. Lapera). Also honored were: Class of 1959, Emerald Jubilarians; Class of  1969, Sapphire Honorees; Class of 1974, Ruby Honorees; Class of 1979, Coral Honorees; and Pearl Honorees, Class of 1984.

This year’s celebration culminated in the GALA Night 2014 ( A Dinner and Recognition Event) held in Astoria Plaza, Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City at 6pm in the evening wherein 34 batches were properly represented from 1950 to 2002 to witness the formal presentation and recognition of this year’s set  of  awardees in the following categories: Most Outstanding Alumni, Achievers and Most Distinguished Alumna.

Leading this year’s awardees was Mrs. Zenaida Lejano Arevalo, Class of 1967, Regional Director, Department of Social Work and Development Region IX as the 2014 Most Distinguished Alumna.  Honorable Mayor Maria Isabelle G. Climaco, this year’s guest of honor , recognized the effort and services that the faculty and staff and the alumni extended during the Zamboanga siege and further emphasized her appeal for them to be one with her in building back a Better Zamboanga.

The celebration was considered as one of the most successful and most attended event compared with previous celebrations because of the cooperation and participation of the ZCHS Alumni and Alumnae coming from the different part of the country and abroad to mention a few, United States, Europe, United Kingdom, Germany, and the Middle East.

Furthermore, the officers of the Zamboanga City High School Alumni Association under the leadership of its president mentioned that the coming 70th Foundationa Day and Alumni Homcoming will be much bigger, more exciting and full of surprises and the Golden Lamp will be brighter as it continues moving forward for a better Zamboanga City High School and Zamboanga City as a whole.
