IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay – The Zamboanga Peninsula Integrated Agricultural Research Center (ZAMPIARC) of the Department of Agriculture (DA) has urged farmers in the province to employ organic agriculture.

In a seminar held last week, Ms. Priscilla C. Jover, assistant manager and focal person on Organic Agriculture Program said organic agriculture is based on four principles: health, fairness, care and ecology.

“It should sustain and enhance the health of soil, plants, animals, human and planet as one as indivisible and build on relationships that ensure fairness with regard to the common environment and life opportunities,” she explained.

Organic agriculture, as one of the advocacies being implemented by DA, aims to promote responsible production and consumption in achieving food self-sufficiency.

It is defined as a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystem and people.

Mr. Ruben A. Baltonado also discussed Adlai production, its health benefits and uses.

Adlai or Adlay, also known as “Job’s tears” in most of East and Southeast Asia, belongs to the same family of grasses or weeds such as wheat, corn, and rice.

Recently, DA informed the public that it wants to build a niche market to encourage more eaters and urge farmers to grow the crops after its successful inclusion into the mainstream research and development program.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala even declared Adlai as one of the country’s “best kept secret” and a potent weapon against hunger in a climate-changed world.

Mr. Danilo Rodriguez, on the other hand, also presented soybean its uses and benefits. Soybean is an industrial crop cultivated for oil and protein. “It is the largest single source of edible oil and account for roughly 50 percent of the total oil seed production in the world,” he said.

Soybean is a good source of Vitamin E and is said to be popular in the world as “Wonder Crop” of the 20th century due to its significant contribution to health and wellness. — FPG/EDT/PIA9-Zamboanga Sibugay
