“It is the primary goal of the Department of Agriculture (DA) through the National Organic Agriculture Program (NOAP) to promote, develop, and implement the practice of organic agriculture in Zamboanga Peninsula towards a competitive and sustainable organic industry,” emphasized Priscilla C. Jover,  Regional Organic Focal Person.

Twenty-six Barangay Captains, Barangay Councilors and stakeholders from the municipality of RT Lim, Zamboanga Sibugay through the support of their Municipal Mayor, Michael A. Piodena underwent a field exposure to the organic farms of the DA particularly in Dumalinao Swine and Poultry Breeding Center (DSPBC), Sumadat, Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur and Mahayag Livestock Breeding Center (MLBC), Mahayag, ZDS last week.

Dr. Cynthia G. Litigio, Station DSPBC showed the participants the new Korean Technology or no wash and odorous organic swine productive system and the organic garden for feeds in Dumalinao.

She also demonstrated the proper mixing of organic feeds using  Adlay Bran, Effective Microorganism Activated Solution (EMAS), molasses, unchlorinated water, fish amino acid, and greens like Tricantera, Rensonil, Flememnglia, Indigofera, Ipil-ipil and Malunggay. The participants were advised to put the mixture inside plastic drums and ferment them for 1-2 weeks in a cool dry place before it can be used for feeding.

“Using the organic feed is one way of increasing farm productivity. Since these ingredients are very affordable and available in the surroundings, we can reduce our expenses on farm inputs.”

Meanwhile, Mrs. Felixia L. Bomes, Station Superintendent of Mahayag Livestock Breeding Center (MLBC), in Mahayag, ZDS showed  the latest technology on  farmers level housing facility and management and the low cost technologies towards increasing productivity, profitability, and income of poultry and small ruminant farmers.

She also presented the proper preparation of organic feed mix using  kangkong, adlay, banana stem, whole rice. “With these organic ingredients, we can assure the protection of the farmers, consumers, and the public’s health in general.”

Danilo L. Danag, 51, Barangay Captain of Taruc, RT Lim, Zamboanga Sibugay said, “we are grateful to the Department of Agriculture for this opportunity. We hope to replicate these organic methods in our hog raising  and poultry breeding in our respective barangays.”  — I Cabeguin/DA-RFO9
