Three WMSU High School campus journalists, along with their English teacher, participated in the biennial regional seminar-workshop dubbed as Camp Blog 1F 2011 at Davao del Norte State College (DNSC), Panabo City, Davao del Norte from May 23 to May 28, 2011.

A project of iSchools of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT), this six-day affair aimed to equip the editorial staff of school papers to have a stronger grasp of how to best maximize ICT skills towards maintaining an online paper. In addition, it intended to capacitate the students and teachers with the requisite Internet skills to enable them to create educational content best suited for Filipino learners to “bridge the digital divide.” Thus, the WMSU High School team, as well as the other participants, converted their school paper, the Newscope, into The Newscope Online, the blog edition.

The Camp Blog 1F was participated in by four other teams coming from the different schools within the geographical proximity of the event’s location. These schools, each being comprised of one teacher and three student-writers, are Agusan del Sur National High School, Zamboanga Sibugay National High School, Quezon National High School (Bukidnon), and Doña Carmen Denia National High School (Davao).

In this enriching activity, Mr. Joe Torres, a seasoned news writer, gave series of lecture on the Dynamics of an Online Newspaper and also conducted a video conference with the participants as he pointed out the merits and flaws of each school’s newly-created blog sites.  He also gave constructive criticisms to the participants so they can improve their works.

On the other hand, Mr. Keith Bacongco, a photographer and writer of online news agency Mindanews, gave creative insights on Photojournalism, Basic Graphics, Layout, Photo Editing, and Multimedia. Participants conducted fieldwork for photography at the Divine Mercy Chapel located at White Sand Beach, Brgy. San Pedro, Panabo City, Davao del Norte. Mr. Keith also gave his creative insights on how to best capture scenes for detailed and more compelling photo story.

To further enrich the participants’ knowledge on online campus journalism, the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) in collaboration with the College of Engineering and Technology of Western Mindanao State University (CET-WMSU) presented to the participants online self-study modules on Blogging, Online Research, Online Writing, Photojournalism, and Video Documentation.

WMSU HS participants worked together to come up with a mural that depicts how a conventional newspaper is converted into online school paper, an individual blog that contains five (5) short blog entries documenting lessons learned from the daily activities in Camp Blog, and an online newspaper as outputs. “The work of the WMSU High School group is the best.

In the end, each participant received a 4-GB USB, courtesy of CICT, and certificates of participation and completion.
