Another  Barangay Food Terminal (BFT) project was recently launched in the region and this time it is in Carbon, Malamawi Island, Isabela City. This is a project of the Department of Agriculture thru its agribusiness division in coordination with the Office of the City Agriculturist of Isabela.

The BFT in Brgy. Carbon will be catering areas in Diki, Tampalan, Sta. Barbara and Lukbutan serving 3,000 households. This will be operated by the Malamawi Women’s Association under    chairwoman Ms. Jamal L. Usman.

It is expected that the BFT functions as a barangay-based food depot and distribution system offering affordable, safe and quality food products like meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, fruits, among others. Just like what Mr. Ferdinand Gamorot, Chief of Agribusiness Marketing and Assistance Division (AMAD) said that the BFT’s concern is to help market agri-fishery goods and bring BFT in your area.

During the launching, on behalf of Regional Executive Director Carlos B. Mendoza, Regional Technical Director Aida P. Cariño inspired the women by saying  “ the involvement of women is doing good. Let’s help each other sustain the project.” Dr. Cariño also challenged the women to increase what they have and if there’s a need for expansion then DA is willing to help.

Regional Agriculture and Fishery Council Coordinator Buduriya Parawan advised the women to also bring-in their agri-fishery by-products as they were also trained on this. In response, Ms. Usman gave the assurance of giving their best in sustaining the BFT with the support of the City Agriculturist in the person of Ms. Gina Alberto in providing technical assistance in terms of market linkages to prospective suppliers.

BFT Malamawi received equipment from DA such as two chest freezers, two chillers as cold storage, 25 pieces plastic crates and five weighing scales, three styropore boxes and two heavy duty calculators   to supplement its operation. DA will also provide financial assistance to supplement its operation upon completion of necessary documents. — Yvette Avellaneda/DA9
