A top official of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has urged taxpayers to pay the “correct taxes” to enable the government to deliver basic services to the people.

Atty. Alert Alocilja, BIR regional director, made the call as he led Wednesday the launching of the tax campaign here in Region IX.

The launching program, which was preceded by a motorcade, was held at a local hotel and was attended by hundreds of stakeholders.

“Pay your correct taxes,” Alocilja said, adding that the public must pay taxes not only for compliance “but out of love and support for country.”

“We are not paying taxes simply because we have an obligation, to be able to engage in business or practice our profession or simply because it’s a requirement, but we pay our taxes because we love our country and we are going to support the government that we have,” he said.

He said the launching of tax campaign is aimed to inform the public of their obligation to the government.

He said his office has been tasked to collect Php 6.57 billion in taxes this year here in the region.

“Please do your share. Do not wait for the April 15 deadline. You can go and pay at any BIR office near your place or avail of our e-filing system or payment,” Alocilja said

He emphasized that there will be no extension as surcharge will be slapped against late filing of income tax returns.

The other sources of tax collections are value added tax, percentage tax, excise tax and others aside from income tax returns.

This year’s tax campaign is anchored on the theme: “Angat pa Pinas. Register, File, and Pay.”

The launching of the tax campaign here was graced by personnel from the BIR central office namely Elenita Mariano, Silverio Sante, Lourdes Fernandez, and Nelson Alvero.

Also present were the Revenue District Officers from this city, Dipolog City, Pagadian City, Zamboanga Sibugay, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi Tawi.
