The Zamboanga Puericulture Learning Center Tetuan campus was formally unveiled Sunday, a dream come true for the officers and board of directors of the Zamboanga Puericulture Center 144 under the leadership of Dr. Rodel Agbulos.

Intended to provide life-long learning experiences to children for them to become globally competitive, the Puericulture Center started offering day care services in 1978 and moved on to offer pre-school education in 1997 following the donation of a 2-storey school building by then Cong. Maria Clara Lobregat.

Now, some three decades after it ventured into a learning center, the Puericulture Center has progressed by leaps and bounds and is now offering elementary education. And from its main site in downtown Zamboanga, the Puericulture Learning Center opens its branch in Tetuan catering to more students.

The Puericulture Learning Center-Tetuan campus, which sits in a property acquired from the heirs of the late Jesus Cabato, also houses a clinic and pharmacy which were also unveiled Sunday.

The inauguration of the Learning Center and the clinic and pharmacy Sunday morning was preceded by a mass which was also held in honor of the late Jesus Cabato, whose birthday fell on that day.

Mayor Celso Lobregat, honorary chairman of the Puericulture Center 144 congratulated the officers and board of directors for their dedication and passion to pursue the center’s mission and vision despite the numerous challenges.

Sometime ago, the mayor said, he disapproved the plan for the Puericulture Center to construct additional buildings in its downtown area site (La Purisima) as it will already violate setback policies causing the Center officers and board of directors to open up the Tetuan campus.

“I congratulate the Board   because you were not disheartened instead you opened up your vision and minds to think out of the box and this is the result. This thing is really providential”, the mayor said in his message during the inauguration rites.

Dr. Agbulos for his part thanked the mayor for his wisdom and the heirs of Jesus Cabato headed by Gigi Reyes-Cabato for offering their property at a very low price with an unlimited payment schedule. Aside from the bargain basement price, the Cabato family is also donating 500 square meters property that will pave the way for the expansion of the Tetuan campus.

“Our dream is no longer a dream but a reality,” Dr. Agbulos, whose highlighted his message with a song rendition of “I believe in Angels”. “I believe in angels and the angel I am referring today is someone sent from above, Gigi Reyes Cabato, she and her family made everything possible for what the Zamboanga Puericulture Learning Center is today”.

Dr. Agbulos likewise thanked “another angel” referring to Mayor Lobregat, whose wisdom he described as “so inspiring”. He said Lobregat’s inspiring wisdom encouraged the Puericulture Center board of directors to work harder to fulfill its mission and vision.

Also present during the affair Sunday were  board members and officers Dr. Milabel Ho, Colet Saavedra, Roberto Torres, Estrella Avila, Ib Sugasa, City Engineer Luis Despalo, City Assessor Erwin Bernardo, Nonie Aranas, Fidel Milan, Raul Regondola, Dr. Ramon Felicilda, Legal Counsel Florencio Liong, Councilor Rogelio Valesco Jr. and several others. Former Health Undersecretary Dr. Mila Fernandez also graced the         occasion.

The Zamboanga Puericulture Center 144 was founded in 1921 and “is motivated by the love of God and a practical concern for the needs of the community especially our mothers and children”.
