A full calendar of fun summer activities awaits residents and visitors alike as Zamboanga City readies for its summer festival celebration.

While several summer activities have already took place the past weeks, the summer festival in Zamboanga, dubbed Summer Fest 2017, will officially kick off with an opening salvo at Paseo del Mar at 5 PM.

The Mi Ciudad de Zamboanga Photo contest will showcase the best photographs of Zamboanga City as seen through the eyes of its residents. Deadline for submission of entries will be on Friday, April 21. The winning photos will be presented in an exhibit during the Dia de Ma’am Caling commemorative program on April 26.

The Dia de Ma’am Caling, an activity remembering the city’s first female chief executive, Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat, will feature a commemorative mass and program at Pasonanca. A mural painting competition will also be held from April 24 to 26 at the Jardin de Maria Clara in Pasonanca in honor of Ma’am Caling.

Meanwhile, the Sta. Cruz island will continue to host games and activities for its Fiesta na Isla undertaking which will run every weekend from April 16 to May 13. Guests are advised to book early to secure their trip to the famed pink-sand beach.

For the month of May, activities will include the Hip Hop Dance Competition: The Illusion Challenge on May 13. The 22nd Summer Learn to Play a Sports Program will also take place for the entire month of May.

In line with the Dia de Gen. Vicente Alvarez on May 18, a commemorative program will be held at the Plaza de Gen. Vicente Alvarez at 8 AM. A mass will be held earlier at 6 AM at Fort Pilar.

Showcasing the creativity and skill of Zamboangueño designers is the Festival delas Bellas y Flores on May 20, 4 PM. A parade featuring the mascota creations of participating designers will be held from the Fire Station to the Centro Latino.

Capping off the summer celebration will be the Danza Verano on May 27 at the Boy Scout Camp in Pasonanca.  (Jasmine Mohammadsali)
