Fr. Enrico V. Montano, co-chair of the Regional Development Council-9 (RDC-9) presided the first meeting of the Council’s Special Committee on Mining on August 15, 2011.  It was held at Roderic’s Resort in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Montano appreciated the presence of agency representatives that manifested their concern over the mining issues in the region.
RDC-9 Vice-Chair and National Economic and Development Authority-9 Regional Director Arturo G. Valero also emphasized the importance of having a meaningful discussion on the mining issues affecting the region.  He raised the need to come up with doable and responsive activities to address the mining concerns.  He underscored the need to strike a balance between mining and protecting the environment and natural resources including food production.

In its Resolution No. IX-010-11 passed on May 4, 2011, the RDC 9 created the Special Committee to Study the Mining Issues in the Region.  It seeks to aid in the monitoring and evaluation of the status of mining in the region and come up with recommendations to address the mining issues affecting the environment and natural resources of the region.

As an initial step, the committee formulated an action plan that details the scope and  activities for the mining study.  The committee also recommended the prohibition of any mining activities near and within watershed areas to cover existing and proposed sites.  The matter will be presented during the 137th RDC IX meeting on Sepember 1, 2011 in Siayan, ZaNorte, for the Council’s approval and endorsement.

The study is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2012. — Vilma M. Julian/NEDA 9
