The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) in cooperation with the Department of Education (DepEd), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). and Smart Communications, Inc. will conduct the 2011 NATIONAL SEARCH FOR SUSTAINABLE AND ECO-FRIENDLY SCHOOLS.

Anent to this search, the City Schools Division of Zamboanga City has already issued a Division Memorandum No. 28 dated September 06, 2010 duly signed by Administrative Officer V Al Rahimin T. Kenoh for the Schools Division Superintendent to disseminate the information to all public and private elementary and secondary school heads to participate in the National Search for Sustainable and Eco-friendly Schools next year.

As indicated in the memo, the search is open to elementary, secondary and tertiary schools nationwide. It aims to 1.) to encourage schools and academic institutions actively involved in environmental issues at the practical and local levels; 2) to develop skills and understanding among the students, faculties and school administrators jm initiating active responses and increasing community awareness and participation on environmental concerns.

The sustainable and eco-friendly schools are schools are those that actually adopt environmental related activities and school programs that foster environmental protection and conservation which serves as mitigating measures for climate change. The schools should initiate and integrate in their instructions, researches, administrations and programs solid waste management, air and water pollution control, clean and green surroundings and many others.

For those schools that are interested and shall participate in the National Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools, the school entries for elementary and high school levels shall be submitted to their respective DepEd Division Offices not later than April 29, 2011. But for colleges and universities, they shall submit to the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) in the respective Regional Offices. The Awarding of Winners and exhibit of winning entries and national finalists will be on November 2011
in time for \National Environmental Awareness Month.

The search is to evaluate and assess how far the public and private institutions from elementary to tertiary involve actively in the environmental protection, conservation and institute measures in responses in the mitigation of climate change. -- Agnes Calasang is a teacher at Boalan Elementary School, Putik District, City
