Today, September 2, is the school celebration of Eid ul Fitr of the Sarang Bangun Learning Center (SBLC), an Arabic-English school located in Newslane, Baliwasan, Zamboanga City.

According to Mr. Noel I. Lariza, school principal, this is the culmination of the month-long activities during Ramadan which was not limited within the school campus but allowed the parents, teachers, administration and schoolchildren to reach out to several Muslim communities in the city.

In cooperation with the Philippine National Police PNP PRO9, an annual gift-giving dubbed as “Parsugpatan sin pagkasilasa ha bulan sin Puasa” was conducted in Upper Calarian and Sinunuc last August 5. More than 200 residents were able to receive bags with five kilos of rice, noodles, sardines, coffee, sugar and slippers for the children.

In the weeks that followed, about 300 residents of Campo Islam, Seaside Baliwasan, Purok 14 Panglima Kalbi Drive, Sinunuc, and Kasanyangan, Sta. Catalina, received 3-5 kilos of rice from parents and generous individuals who channeled their sadaqqa (charity) through the school’s community outreach program.

As the school centers its celebration inside the campus today, a special bazaar will be opened to its students and children of neighboring communities for free. Each child with ticket is entitled to have seven different items like bags, toys, school supplies, etc. The bazaar will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Hja. Zenaida Tan Lim, school president, is jubilant to accept these donations from an anonymous donor and said that this undertaking is not only meant to make the children happy because of the gifts, but the simulated experience will teach them proper values thus paving the way for SBLC to achieve its vision as the “Alma Mater of a Responsible Muslim Community”.
