A farmer and his 13 year-old daughter went missing and were feared dead while another daughter survived after a strong current in the river swept them away in Kipit, Labason, Zamboanga del Norte last Saturday night.

The victims were identified as Danny Ornopia, 39, and his daughter Monaira. Narrowly escaped death was Ornopia’s 15 year-old daughter Juna.

Police said that Ornopia and his two daughters were crossing Kipit river using a rope that was reportedly tied at both ends of the riverbanks.

The victims had been doing this practice every time they are crossing the river due to the absence of a bridge.

However, the water suddenly rose in the river and a strong current swept Ornopia and his daughter away.

The 15 year-old survivor told policemen that his father and younger sister lost grip of the rope and the water dragged them away.

A search and recovery operation was carried out by police and barangay officials, but the bodies were not found yet as of press time. —  Noning R. Antonio
