Not all are born writers. But, like a story, writers can be crafted from a rough draft into a stage play.

This year, the Xavier Center for Culture and the Arts (XCCA) in Cagayan de Oro City together with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) is taking out its pen and paper once more as SULAT DULA – a basic playwriting workshop in Mindanao, comes back on its second wave.

SULAT DULA has started last 2008 with the vision of creating a hub for playwrights in Northern Mindanao – enticing students, educators and everyone who knows how to hold a pen to write and express.

Truly, the workshop deserves another round of artistic and intellectual discussion. On November 4-6, 2010 at the Xavier University Board Room, a new cluster of writers will be honed.

In this workshop are 10 fellows who are budding playwrights in Mindanao. They will undergo an intensive play critiquing with the hope of staging their own creations in the future. A panel of three veteran writers with Dr. Steven Prince Fernandez, facilitator, will grace the event.

The lucky fellows this year are: PEPITO P. SUMAYAN –Community Organizer/ Trainer/Performer, Davao; HANNAH LOUISE ENANORIA –Ateneo de Davao University Student, Davao; HENRIETTA DIANA DE GUZMAN – UP Mindanao Student, Davao; GLEN GALAO – Notre Dame Siena College Professor, General Santos; ROGELIO FANTONIAL GARCIA JR. – Mindanao State University Professor, Marawi; TED N. TAC-AN –OZAMIZ, La Salle University; GARRY A. ZAMORAS –Accountant, Zamboanga del Sur; EFREN MERCADO – Liceo de Cagayan University Professor, Cagayan de Oro; and JAY REY ALOVERA –Xavier University Professor, Cagayan de Oro.

Their works will be scrutinized by the following panelists: RODOLFO VERA – Co-founder, Festival and Artistic Director of the VIRGIN LABFEST; AMETTA TAGUCHI – Corpus Cristi School Professor, PALANCA Awardee (Full-length Play); and ALFRED SANTOS – Writer, ANG SISTEMA NI PROPESOR TUKO.

SULAT DULA 2 has indeed widened its horizon which aims at establishing a sustained playwright development in Mindanao. Soon, the stage will not just be an isolated platform but a mirror of Mindanao’s beauty. -- PIA9-BST
