LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees… all these curses will come on you and overtake you… The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors, festering sores and the itch, from which you cannot be cured…” (Deuteronomy 28:22, 27, the Holy Bible).

DEADLY WARNING FROM WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZAION: While we are all agog over the Ombudsman decision to file non-bailable plunder cases against Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada, and Bong Revila, in connection with the P10 billion pork barrel scam, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a deadly health warning which may affect millions of Filipinos as well.

In a media advisory, WHO said some one billion people around the world die yearly due to bites from disease-causing organisms, known as vectors. And how are Filipinos going to be affected by this? Simply because, as per WHO findings, vectors infect people who lack access to safe drinking water, and who have problems with sanitation and hygiene, just like millions and millions of Filipinos at present.

Even as I am writing this, it is a fact that there are still too many places in the Philippines where Filipinos are not serviced by any water district or by any other water system that are supposed to give them safe drinking water, even if there is a yearly allocation of some P2 billion or so for water projects. This makes Filipinos greatly vulnerable to vectors and the diseases that they cause, which, WHO said, can be fatal or destructive.

GOV’T MUST ACCOUNT FOR MONEY IN WATER PROJECTS: In a desperate situation such as this, what can ordinary Filipinos do? Nothing much really, in terms of seeking government action on their pitiful plight, for no one in government seems interested enough to address the ever-present problem of lack of safe drinking water, despite the availability of the P2 billion or so yearly fund for water projects.

Maybe someone can file a case in court to compel the government to account for the billions of money it is allocating for these water projects, to determine whether they were used at all, what water projects were started or completed, or, in the absence of any such projects, where did the billions of government money intended for water projects go?

But then, that would not really solve the problem of diseases and deaths brought about by infection from vectors, would it? I propose therefore a solution from the Bible (considering that infection from vectors gives rise to high fevers and hot body temperatures, which are some of the curses listed in that Book): read the Bible, and obey God’s commands.

NO CURE FOR VECTORS’ DISEASES: If we read the Bible in its Deuteronomy 28:15-68, we will see there that God has promised to rain down His curses (53 major curses, more or less) on a people who no longer listen to Him and who no longer obey His commands. Among these curses are the curses of wasting disease, fever and inflammation, boils and tumors, festering sores and the itch.

The Book of Deuteronomy has a dire warning insofar as these curses are concerned: there will be no cure for any of these diseases and, in fact, a great number of people who will be afflicted with them face certain death. The WHO advisory, issued to celebrate “World Health Day 2014”, confirms this scary warning by saying that, indeed, one billion people die yearly from these diseases.

For those who want to escape the curse from these diseases, it is clear that there is just one remedy effectively available, and it is this: read the Bible, obey God’s commands. In Joshua 1:8, reading the Bible, meditating on it day and night, and obeying it at all times would make the reader successful, prosperous and victorious. Try it now!
