LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “Whoever fears the Lord walks uprightly, but those who despise him are devious in their ways…” (Proverbs 14:2, the Holy Bible).

BIBLICAL BASIS FOR PAYING TAXES: Is there a Biblical basis for paying our taxes to the government? Yes, there is, and this is found in several passages of the Bible, the most famous of which are the stories found in Matthew 17:24-27, Matthew 22:15-21, and in Mark 12:13-17. In all these, Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, emphasized that everyone must pay taxes.

Here is the account of paying taxes in Matthew 17:24-27: “After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, `Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?’ `Yes, he does,’ he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak.

“ `What do you think, Simon?’ he asked. `From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own children or from others?’ `From others,’ Peter answered. `Then the children are exempt,’ Jesus said to him. `But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours’…”

TWO MORE FIGHTS BEFORE PACQUIAO RETIREMENT: I agree that Manny Pacquiao should now retire from boxing, and spare himself the disease that has hit great boxes of the past. But the question is, if he will retire now, where else would he earn the millions he has been earning from boxing, which, admittedly, he will need if he is to run for senator and, later, for president of this country?

It is an undeniable fact that the billions of pesos he already received from his previous bouts are now almost gone, and whatever money that may have been left with him at the moment will even be seized from him by the Bureau of Internal Revenue which said he has a P2 billion unpaid tax obligation.

If Pacquiao has no money, winning as a senator and as president may proved to be a “mission impossible” considering the kind of politics we have here in this country. I therefore suggest that he should continue boxing, at least for two more fights of a lifetime—the third fight with Timothy Bradley, and the fight of a lifetime with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Then, he can retire, and pursue politics for good!

US WILL DETERMINE 2016 RP PRESIDENT? Assuming that President Aquino and US President Barrack Obama will be able to sign the “Agreement on Enhanced Defense Cooperation” on the occasion of the American president’s state visit to the Philippines on April 28-29, 2014, it will still take a long time before the accord is finally allowed to be carried out, barring, of course, a Supreme Court ruling against it.

I think that any implementation of the agreement, if ever, will have to wait until a new president takes over in 2016, and this I am sure is an incentive enough for the US to sway—once again, of course—the results of the forthcoming presidential elections. I believe that whoever will uphold the US interest on this issue—and on a host of other important issues as well—will become the next Philippine president.

I am sure that US magic—in whatever form this may come—will make a decisive impact on the 2016 presidential elections, in much the same way that it has made a decisive impact on past Philippine elections, and on past political turmoil in this country that saw the overthrow of presidents and governments.
