LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…`My Spirit, who is on you, will not depart from you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants—from this time on and forever,’ says the Lord…” (Isaiah 59:21, the Bible).

ERAP’S PROTEGES IN 2000, HIS NEMESIS IN 2014: Here is an interesting disclosure in Facebook, obviously dealing with loyalties and changing fortunes at the highest levels, coming from my cousin, Mr. Renato Mauricio, a guy who is quite knowledgeable about the many visits of former President Joseph Estrada, now Manila mayor, to the United States of America.

My cousin (called Rey by us, his relatives) wrote: “In August 2000, then President Joseph Estrada went to the USA for a ten-day official visit with, among others, his Cabinet officials and a few members of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

“Before President Erap delivered his speech in front of the Fil-Am community in Los Angeles which was held at the plush Westin Bonaventure, I noticed that only two members of his delegation were given special mention, and both came forward and stood on center stage as their names were called.

“They were Secretary Mar Roxas of the Department of Trade and Industry and then Tarlac Congressman Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III. They were then Erap’s protégées, turned nemesis a decade later”. Rey included a photo to accompany this Facebook post of his, which shows President Estrada with his Presidential Security Group Commander, Gen. Rodulfo Diaz. Interesting, yes?

BIBLICAL WARNINGS VS. TREACHERY: And, what do you know! The Bible has some warnings about treachery. In its Isaiah 24:16-18, we read the following: “From the ends of the earth we hear singing: `Glory to the Righteous One.’ But I said, `I waste away, I waste away! Woe to me! The treacherous betray! With treachery the treacherous betray!’

“Terror and pit and snare await you, people of the earth. Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. The floodgates of the heavens are opened, the foundations of the earth shake…”

BIGGER SSS BENEFITS GIVEN RETROACTIVE EFFECT: Following Malacañang’s approval, the Social Security System (SSS) will now give a10-percent across-the-board pension increase for work-related claims under the Employees’ Compensation (EC) Program and the doubled EC funeral grant, which now stands at P20,000. Both increases will be implemented retroactively, with September 2013 as the date of effectivity.

Agnes San Jose, SSS Vice President for Benefits Administration, said the pension hike covers about 17,200 active EC pensioners under SSS as of August 31, 2013 for permanent partial disability, permanent total disability and survivorship. Meanwhile, SSS claimants of EC funeral grants for deaths dated September 1, 2013 onwards are entitled to the higher P20,000 benefit.

President Benigno S. Aquino III approved the EC benefit upgrades under Executive Order No. 167 issued last May 26. The EC Program – which provides additional benefits for employees with work-connected sicknesses, injuries and death – is administered by SSS for the private sector and by the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) for the public sector.
