Despite the precarious and volatile peace and order conditions, some businessmen and entrepreneurs have bravely established their businesses in this city. This is now apparent when one goes around the city. These days, one can see buildings and business establishments that are being constructed at every nook and corner, even in many vacant lots. Many business establishments that were closed, are now being renovated and revived by young entrepreneurs who risk their investments and take the initiative of putting up a new enterprise to make profits. They are the type who believe in the old business dictum that “there’s money in dangerous places.”

One of the new establishments that has caught the taste and fancy of the local food lovers and connoisseurs is Fat Monk. Originally established in Cagayan de Oro City, its owner, who is from this city, transferred the restaurant to its new location at Cabato Drive near the San Bernardino Bridge. The restaurant offers a menu of Filipino, Malaysian, Thai, Vietnemese, Indonesian, Singaporean and Middle East cuisines, something that has never been done here in the city. The foods are not only tasty and delicious to the palate but are also pleasing to the eyes. I mean the food presentation is simply pretty and awesome and the prices are reasonable.

Barely two months since it opened its doors to the public, Fat Monk has been drawing numerous food lovers and connoisseurs. It opens at 10 o’clock in the morning for lunch and closes at 2:00 in the afternoon then opens at 6:00 in the evening for dinner and closes at 10:00 p.m. Since it is always full, a one-day-before reservation must be made for one who wants to eat at this new restaurant.

Another establishment most of us Zamboangueños are eagerly waiting to open is the KCC Mall. This will be the biggest mall and entertainment center in Western Mindanao. I’ve been to one of KCC Malls in General Santos City and city residents there say that it’s the best, better than Shoemart.

What makes me excited is the opening of their grocery department. I’ve seen the quality of meat, fruits and vegetables they sell which is comparative to Shoemart and Robinsons. We deserve the best and this is something that we have been waiting for. In due time, it will be goodbye to those malls that offer us low-quality goods and items.

For making their moves under the present risky and unstable conditions, these establishments will certainly be the leaders of the pack.
