BY Atty. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “Righteousness exalts a nation, but in is a disgrace to any people…” (Proverbs 14:34, the Holy Bible).

PNOY ALSO FAILED VS. CORRUPTION: Reactions from well-meaning citizens, from here and abroad, are pouring in on items we are publishing here, and, once more, we yield this column to them. Another reaction from New York, USA-based Filipino lawyer Mariano Patalinjug: “Attorney Batas Mauricio: Quite true that President Aquino has failed in his pledged fight against poverty.

“And it’s not only Credit-Suisse which reports this; you must have read SWS’s Mahar Mangahas’ column which pretty much makes the same assertion, albeit complete with stunning statistics, region by region. And it’s not only in the critical area of poverty where he is a failure. He is also a failure in the area of corruption. Recall that Mr. Aquino rode to presidential victory on a solemn pledge to slay the twin dragons of corruption and poverty.

“To be completely honest, those two dragons are still very much alive and kicking! Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Renato Corona, Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada, Bong Revilla, et. al., have yet to see the insides of Muntinlupa. And now PNP director Purisima and VP Jejomar Binay are conspicuosly in the mass media! Not as putative heroes, but as high public officials who may soon be unmasked as villains!”

PNOY, DESPITE HIS FAULTS, LAYS FOUNDATIONS OF GOOD GOV’T: From former Sen. Rene Saguisag: “If PNoy had not run or had run and lost, in 2010, would we be better off in corruption, a problem that goes back thousands of year? Erap or Manny would lead the charge. After pile-driving, following World War II, 20 years of the Marcoses and ten years of the Arroyos, I think we are seeing a good ground floor being built.

“I am against his running again in 2016. His successors should follow with a good second floor, etc., to minimize graft. Maybe we can yet go back to the government of my youth, when there was palabra, delicadeza and tales about the rich entering government, and leaving it poor. In the early 80’s we were characterized as a country of 40 million cowards and one son of a bitch (I’d add and one bitch).

“Now we deal with the problem of feeding more than 100 million. In a journey of many, many, miles, PNoy, Kim Herrera and others, have taken the first steps, the caravan not stopping for every barking dog. We cannot ever give up on the only Motherland we have, for the sake of our apos.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH US, FILIPINOS? From businessman Domingo S. Guevarra Jr.: “Sen. Rene, I completely agree with your sentiments! President Pnoy has many faults, but his having built a strong ground floor foundation far outweighs all his perceived (maybe even mostly real) faults!

“I hope and pray that whoever succeeds him is also able to build the second floor. To my personal estimation, the ideal building our country needs requires many floors, depending on the need of the times. I wish you continued good health and sound mind. BoyG (Domingo S. Guevara,Jr. (PH) +63-2-531-3687…”

These are evidently thoughtful reactions, all aimed at pushing our country and our people to true success and progress. They show that we still haven’t run out of well-intentioned Filipinos. But the inevitable question is: how come we, as a people, are still in a rut? What is wrong with us, Filipinos?
