LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…`If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land; but if you resist and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword.’ For the mouth of the Lord has spoken…” (Isaiah 1:19-20, the Holy Bible).

PRAYER BRIGADES FOR TYPHOON RUBY? Prayer brigades seem to be the “in” thing in the Philippines every time a typhoon or some other calamity threatens the nation, as in the case of Ruby, now touted to be a super typhoon in the mold of 2013’s Yolanda. Everybody but everybody sends out text messages and post requests for prayers in social networking sites, giving out the impression that prayers alone will stop the typhoons, or avert the death and destruction that come with them.

But, with due respect, this is a mockery of what Jesus, our God and Savior, is saying in many parts of the Bible, and if we really believe Jesus and accept Him as God and Savior, we should pay attention to His Word, and comply with them, obeying them carefully.

First, Jesus is clear: prayers alone will not suffice. Second, calling Him “God” will not suffice. Third, He wants something else done by those who believe Him. This is what He said in Matthew 7:21 of the Bible: “…`Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven’…”

THE WISE RESPONSE FOR TYPHOON RUBY:  It is therefore important to know the will of the Father, so we can comply with what Jesus is saying in Matthew 7:21 of the Bible. Now, where can we find the will of the Father? It can be found only in His Bible, and in no other. In 2 Timothy 3:16, we are told that “All Scripture is inspired by God…” Nothing is clearer on this, is there?

In fact, Jesus Himself is saying that, in the case of rains, floods, and strong winds, the antidote against their destructive and deadly effects would be listening to Him and obeying His commands. Those who will listen and obey Him will not be destroyed, but those who will listen and not obey Him will die.

This is clear in Matthew 7:24-27 of the Bible where, specifically and quite frighteningly, Jesus predicted the coming of such rains, floods, and strong winds, and where He clarified that only two people will face these calamities—the wise and the fools. Are you wise, from the point of view of Jesus? Or are you a fool, according to His standards?

THE PRAYER TO FIGHT CALAMITIES: Be that as it may, those who knowingly believe that Jesus is God and Savior must derive comfort from the assurances in the Bible that He came to save His believers from destruction or from perishing, being assured of eternal life in Paradise as a full reward (see John 3:16). He came to give life to believers, a life which is full and abundant with His blessings (John 10:10).

It is therefore imperative that, if we what to pray against typhoons and calamities, we should try to pray in the manner that He taught us, particularly in Matthew 6:9-13. What is this manner of praying? It is the prayer now called by many as “Our Father.” Just for the record, this is a powerful prayer which believers must recite with total and utmost confidence.

Here it is: Our Father in heaven, Holy is your Name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil, for the kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours, now and forever, Amen.
