LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…`This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger’…” (Luke 2:12, the Holy Bible).

SO WHAT IF CONVICTS ARE WHOOPING IT UP INSIDE BILIBID? HASN’T THESE HAPPENED BEFORE?  Ok, so Justice Secretary Leila De Lima exposed the favored life that some convicted felons are leading right inside the National Penitentiary or the Bilibid. But what is going to happen after this expose? The air conditioned rooms and mind-boggling instruments and gadgets will be removed? Some lower-level- prison officials will be investigated?

And then, after a while, everything is going to be back to business once again at the Bilibid? Filipinos have short memories, convicted criminals continue to rake in money even under supposedly strict guarding by jail authorities, and officials will continue to succumb over and over again to bribes. In no time at all, the air conditioned rooms and the out of this world amenities will be there once again.

So what must we do? Nothing. The only reason why convicted criminals are able to get away enjoying the lifestyle of the rich and the famous, even when they are confined inside Bilibid, is that officials supposedly keeping watch over the felons collude with them in the commission of these anomalies. Against these officials, there is nothing much we can do, really. Hasn’t all these happened before?

OF KINGS AND RIVALS: Many consider this as fiction. Yet, it is a fascinating story about love and forgiveness which had been proved true many times, through the passage of time. It started when a powerful king was told that two of his rival kings had conspired to attack his kingdom. The powerful king and his constituents got very afraid, and started shaking like trees swayed by strong winds, not knowing what to do.

God saw the unspeakable fear that gripped the powerful king and his people, and He felt obliged to tell this king that there was nothing to be afraid of, that the rival kings would die even before they could stage their assault. So God sent to him one of His prophets, the one named Isaiah, to confirm God’s protection for the king and his kingdom.

Yet, the king did not believe God’s message spoken through Isaiah. The king chose instead to entertain his fear of his rivals. Angered by the king’s lack of faith in God, Isaiah directed him to ask for a sign from God, either from the highest heights or from the deepest deep, so God could confirm His message of hope. But the king persisted in his lack of faith.

THE BOY IS “MIGHTY GOD, EVERLASTING FATHER”: Isaiah then bellowed, “if you do not want to ask for a sign, the Lord Himself will give you a sign”, to affirm the truthfulness of His message of comfort to the beleaguered king. The sign? Isaiah said it is going to be a virgin, or a pure young woman, or a chaste maiden, conceiving and then giving birth to a son who will be called by her as Emmanuel.

It was not explained why Isaiah gave this particular sign. But it was sure not just an ordinary prophetic sign. It confirmed that God Himself will come down from heaven, assume the form of a human baby, so He could be with His people, so He could save them from sin and eternal destruction.

Many will contest that the virgin’s son is God Himself. Yet, Isaiah made sure everyone understood that the “son” is going to be God Himself, because, in another prophesy he made, he said the boy will be called “Mighty God, Everlasting Father”. Can God do this, assume human form and start off as a boy, so He could save sinners? Spaniards (or Italians?) have a way of saying this: “con Dios sin limites”. Praise God!!!
