KAKAMPI MO ANG BATAS: What should Francis’ message be to Pinoys? PDF Print E-mail

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…`Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go’…” (Joshua 1:7, the Holy Bible).

WHAT SHOULD BE THE MESSAGE OF FRANCIS TO FILIPINOS? What do I want Pope Francis to tell the millions and millions of Filipinos who have remained Roman Catholics during all these times, in his five-day-January 15-19, 2015-visit to the Philippines, the predominantly Catholic nation in Asia?

Many things, of course, but, if I could give an unsolicited advice to him, I will ask Francis to tell Filipino Catholics, and perhaps even other Filipino Christians who are not Catholics, only one important thing: for them to read the Bible everyday, meditate on it day and night, and to carefully obey everything that is written in it.

That message is not mine, and, as Francis will immediately realize, would not even be a message from Catholics alone. It is a message for all believers from the Bible itself, and, although there are many chapters and verses which expound on the same instruction, the exact source of that message is Joshua 1:8, in the Old Testament.

FILIPINOS SHOULD READ, STUDY, AND OBEY, THE BIBLE: Here is what Joshua 1:8 says in its entirety: “Do not forget to read the Book of the Law. Meditate on it day and night. And be careful to obey everything that is written in it. For then, you shall become prosperous and successful.”

Undeniably, as a nation who believes in God and who adheres to the Christian faith, Filipinos must be made to understand that it is only by reading the Bible that they could strengthen their faith in accordance with what God Himself directs.

While Filipino believers can rely on their leaders for spiritual enlightenment, it makes a lot of difference if they themselves would read the Bible everyday, study and think about it day and night, and, acting on what they have read and studies, carefully obey God’s instructions.

POPE TO FILIPINOS: READ YOUR BIBLES: For it is in obeying God’s instructions in the Bible that a believer becomes entitled to blessings from God. This is what Jesus, our God and Savior, said in Matthew 7:21: not all who calls on, or prays to, God will be saved and enter heaven, as only those who do the will of the Father in heaven will be heard in their prayers and would be saved and enter eternal life in Paradise.

Where then can we find the will of the Father? It is only in His Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16 says all Scripture (the Bible) is inspired by God, even while they have been written by men. Then, Hebrews 4:12 reminds all of us that the Word of God (again, the Bible) is living and active and is sharper than any double-edged sword.

Romans 1:16 also assures all believers that they should not be ashamed of the Gospel (the Bible, of course) “for it is the power of God for the salvation of all believers…” It is therefore important that, if Pope Francis wants to strengthen our countrymen’s faith in God during these greatly troubled times, he should tell Filipinos: read and study and obey your Bibles!
