A THOUGHT TO SHARE: 1st Philippine Urbanization Forum PDF Print E-mail

Last May 25-26, 2011, I had the opportunity to attend the “1st Philippine Urbanization Forum”, in my capacity as the president of the Zamboanga City Federation of People’s Organization. This was held at Toyota Asian Cultural Center, University of the Philippines Campus, Diliman, Quezon City. With me were Ms. Mary Ann Porquillo, program manager of ZOPHISOCDEV, Ms. Violy Alejandro, president of the Homeowner’s People’s Organization Federation, Ms. Cesinia Rimando, vice president of ZACUPA.

Also with us were Ric Pagotaisidro, head of the City Housing Office, Zamboanga City and City Councilors Percival Ramos and Rey Candido.
Vice President Jejomar Binay, chairman of HUDCC was the keynote speaker. There was a lengthy discussion on the first day. We took our lunch at 12:30 p.m. Some of the very important topics that were taken up in the first day were the Budget Agreement of the national budget of 2012 between the National Housing Authority which was represented by Mr. Froiian Kampitan, Assistant General Manager of NHA and PHILSSA, represented by Architect Sarah Redoblado.

The topics on evictions and internal settlement were also discussed. The speakers were Atty. Angel Ojastro, special assistant to the Secretary of DILG, Jose Morales of Urban Poor Alliance, Rolando Serna, Market 3 FONNA.

In the afternoon, the first topic discussed was DSWD engagement with the Urban sectors. The speaker was Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman, DSWD Secretary.
The next topic that was taken up was on the best practices and experience on community development. The Bagong Pag-asa Homeowners Association Resettlement in Davao City was the model. The presenters were Florence Briones, president BPHOA, Ray Ryan Rigor, director City Housing Office, Davao City and Junard Ambo, program manager ofSALORSEPFI.

The next topic was the sharing of Bicol cities experience on community development. The presenters were Mayor Linda Gonzales, Ligao City, chairperson, League of Bicol cities, Elisa Barcelon of BUPCC and Myrna Lianes of COPE.

The last session for the first day was the launching of PHILSSA Publications, “Project Upsurge: Partnership for scaling up slum improvement in Philippine Cities.”
These were the topics that were taken up for the second day: Housing innovations, constructed wetlands, solar home system, alternative RC materials and participatory governance in health.
