TODAY’S MANNA

BY Berlie G. Yap

Have you come across the news this week that a Chinese businessman lost $14B in one day? Wow, it was a lot of money! In our way even losing a hundred pesos is already a real loss, let alone $14B and in one day. It just confirms two immutable truths in this world — first nothing is permanent on earth, second, something is more valuable than money.

In the ancient time, currency was in the form of coinage. Thus, they’d the golden and silver coins. Yet, in the process of time, when paper was discovered, then the legal tender evolved into paper notes. In fact, in the corporate world today, business transactions  and trades are even done in a cashless way. Transactions and exchanges happen in the form of electronic, not anymore in cash.

Money is a gift from God which He gave that we can use to live a decent life in this world. Money also speaks for civility and convenience. It is designed for our personal comfort, thus we HAVE them. What is wrong somehow is when this same gift will HAVE us. In other words, when it becomes the controlling force in our lives.

Besides, there are real stuffs in this world that cannot be bought with money like love, joy and peace. We ought to work, and work hard, for our future and for our families, but not so much to the extent of depriving ourselves to value the more essential stuffs in life.

I heard once that love is spelled as capital letters T.I.M.E. If you love a person, who is important to you, you must know how to give him/her time. Parents mustn’t forget this value for their kids, or spouses to each other, and most of all us to our God. This is the reason why we go to our churches, at least once a week, pray and read the Bible regularly.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.” (Matt. 6:33, ESV) When there is love, there is also that sense of importance. Isn’t it when we had our first cellphone or our first iPad, beside our extra ordinary joy we were feeling that moment, we also so carefully handled those stuffs everyday that we even could not allow even a scratch to their skins!

We often miss to judge the essentiality of the eternal from the temporary things. This is a human tendency, man is always short sighted in his journey to this side of eternity — the earth. Thus, he is regularly reminded by the Creator in different ways that he can return to the old and right path.

The lost sheep in Bible is very popular and a usual bedtime story to countless of children. That lost sheep was a lovely one. It was just that the wide and huge grazing territory disoriented him, while the valley floor down below did probably also allure him to separate from the rest of the 99. Off he went to follow his own way, until he realized that he was already in the dark desolation, alone and lost.

The real hero in the story is the Good Shepherd who was willing to leave the comfort of his fence to scour the unfamiliar terrain just to seek and save his lost beloved sheep. In the story, the Good Shepherd didn’t stop until he found the scared lost sheep.

We astray, and often, in our own way! We ought to thank God though that despite He always sends circumstances and situations to bring us back to him. This humble article can be also a reminder which God can use to lead you back to the right track again. Disorientation most of the time happens when our priorities in life go wrong.

First things should be first and not to be placed down below to the last in the list. This can help by following our fingers as the order of our life’s priorities: the thumb for God as the first, the point finger for our family—remember family comes next to God, the middle finger can be our jobs and studies, the ring finger is ourselves, while the index finger for the other things.

Never mixed-up the order because once you do, problems will start to haunt and definitely topple you down. Focus is a result to knowing your priorities and direction. Very nice to live in this world when you understand the reason of your very existence, well if you do, life will be such a sane and a beautiful one. That’s a guarantee.
