Table Talk

In a democracy, a government should be: “for the people”, “by the people” and “of the people”. If you change the three words of “for” “by” and “of” into “fool” “buy” and “off”, it changes the principle of democracy into a tyrannical dictatorship.

Our democracy copied from the American government is slowly leading to a dictatorship. For one, many of our freedoms are sometimes supressed. Government agencies cannot go against an order from the executive department and those affected by these inadequacies are the people. Even the leverage of balance between the three branches of our government seemingly is controlled by the Executive Department. The Legislative and Judicial Departments many times look subservient to the Executive Department when infact, they exist on the principle of “check and balance”. Scandals and anomalies of bribery, injustice and other crimes against society, committed by high government officials are not taken seriously for reasons they are party mates of the ruling administration.  “In aid of Legislation” is the most abused legislative privilege because many times it justifies the means of the Executive Department. Purely interference happened and disrupts the “check and balance” process. One cannot help but doubts the motives of some legislators that allow themselves to be used in the name of political party affiliation.

The latest misadventure of China into flexing her military might into the contested area of the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea and reclaiming shoals and isles at the Spratlys allegedly converting those isles into a military fortress and airfields is clearly an intrusion to our sovereignty and violates the provision of our Philippine Constitution on territory. Philippine Government instead of talking directly to  China to resolve the aggression went directly to the U.N. to intercede but knowingly that International Law cannot force a sovereign nation to comply, so the issue is till there until now and in fact China is still expanding. China made it very very clear to our government from the very beginning that they are open to dialogue for resolution instead of going to the world court. If after a dialogue with China nothing happens, then it is time to seek intercession on a purely internal problem of our two countries. The suspected vast reserves of oil and gas in the Spratlys, could have been shared because the Philippines cannot develop it alone at this stage. To look for other foreign nations to help us develop the Spratlys does not change the situation.

Now the country is faced with a Constitutional crisis because of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) that aims to extend full autonomy to some parts in Mindanao allegedly to have a lasting peace after decades of bloodshed with a faction of belligerent tribe. The mere fact that other warring tribes in Mindanao publicly claim that they don’t want to join the Bangsamoro autonomy, peace is still elusive. Besides, the form of autonomy for the BBL is totally different from the autonomy that the Philippine Constitution envisions. The grant of a territory, different form of government, independent civil service, independent police and peace keeping forces, bigger share from the income of her natural resources and businesses, with her own territorial waters and seas and a subsidy almost as big as the national budget, a totally different in form and governance from the other political subdivisions of the country is not autonomy, it is almost an independent mini state like East Timor in Indonesia.

Scoop: Adolf Hitler said in August 21, 1939, lifted from Life magazine “there is a road to freedom, its milestones are:Obedience, Endeavor, Honesty, Order, Cleanliness, Sobriety, Truthfulness, Sacrifice and Love of Fatherland”. Listen BBL, food for your thoughts.
