Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

R.T. Lim Boulevard is now clear of internally displaced people (IDP). Months ago, it was scene of chaos, pollution and a community composed of “no address” people. The IDPs made the city’s tourist attraction, an empire of anarchist, because the whole stretch of the boulevard seemed to be inhabited by “untouchables”.     Mayor Maria Isabelle “beng” Climaco-Salazar and District 1 Congressman Celso Lobregat have now restored and improved the boulevard. Now, it is alive again. The expansion of the bay walk area is almost complete, over a kilometer of walking area for exercise and a pay comfort room is almost complete. The improvement is something that the city can be proud of, because it restored a city landmark, long considered historical. One can now walk conveniently at the bay walk and at ease, because, there are no more stones and pebbles, the whole stretch if completed will be concreted.

Table Talk and so with many city residents, young and old, male and female, regularly used that bay walk for brisk walking every weekend. The morning sea breeze is excellent and healthy, however, two perennial problem remain: Even with the garbage bins the city government provided at strategic areas of the bay walk, garbage is thrown everywhere. The parking area provided by the city in which motorcycles, are parked disorderly occupying almost all parking spaces and your four-wheel vehicle has to park elsewhere. A policeman or maybe a traffic aide must be assigned in that area to instill discipline among the joggers. However, the city should assign committed policemen and traffic aides, who will really implement order in the area and not just go there and chat in their police vehicles and go blind among the unruly joggers.

Parking and anti-Littering ordinances should be implemented and enforced at the bay walk area of the boulevard and discipline those litterbugs and unruly drivers with fines as mandated in the ordinance. The City Government has improved that area at a huge cost of “people’s money” and should not be vandalized by uncultured barbarians who are now infesting our cosmopolitan city.  Enough is enough, let us now join hands to bring back the old glory of Zamboanga City. Those who made Zamboanga City their homes must follow the city ordinances and those who cannot and will not follow, must “scram” and “get lost”. The city will be better off without incorrigible recidivists. This is our city and everybody must share the responsibility to make it clean and hospitable, it is as simple as that.

That public pay comfort rooms when it will be open for use, must have round-the-clock  caretakers paid by the city . This is to ensure that cleanliness is always there and the lifespan of those comfort rooms will be longer. Look at the comfort rooms at the public golf beach in Barangay Upper Calarian, they are not only dirty but “smelly” and only few of those comfort rooms are working when some of them newly constructed. Some people refuse to learn basic hygiene and they should be separated or else barbarians will one day rule and lord it over the city. “Spare the rod and spoil the child” must be a constant reminder to our city leaders..

Scoop: If the ordinances on these two perennial problems of garbage and parking will be implemented at the RT Lim blvd. bay walk area, we will have the best “exercise” area. The sea breeze is incomparable and wonderful. Try going at the bay walk area on your next weekend, see the improvement.
