Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

Education can best be achieved accurately and successfully if students and their teachers are mentally fit.    In a classroom where students come from different families, culture and background, not all have the same frequency in the acceptance of a lesson and this a problem in learning. The situation will be aggravated if one or two students have behavioral problems. It will affect the learning process of the entire class because they become a nuisance. In the kinder school, “bully” pupils exist and if left unchecked, they will be potential undesirables in all learning institutions. The situation is more alarming if teachers themselves have behavioral problems, because they cannot analyze their students behavior and most often even their relationship with their co-teachers or subordinates is one that is beyond the normal. Heads of learning institutions must be mentally fit to lead a school, otherwise, it will be a case of “the blind leading the blind” where everyday the school’s working environment is not conducive to learning because doubts, animosity and suspicion are hidden in everybody’s mind, ready to explode at the slightest difference. The entire institution becomes a victim of the teacher’s or superior’s dangerous lucid intervals.

Mentally unfit superiors many times decide unfairly and unjustly favor those close to them without taking into account the feelings of their subordinates. They firmly believe that they are the demigod in the institution. Their ego is higher than the established standards of the institution and insults and lambasts anybody that do not conform with their decision. This is the bane in any organization when a superior is a “shenanigan” and  is happy to look at the miseries of those they trample upon.

Government institutions that are supposedly the cream of learning must lead the example of  “effective education” and that human relations within their organization should be the “show window” of learning institutions. They receive higher wages and privileges than most private institutions, however, some of the government institution’s faculty and staff are treated with disdain, worst, even some teaching standards are waived in favor of friendship. This actuation is surprising and makes you wonder if this handiwork is normal and correct.

Scoop:How true is this information that a janitor or utility man sometimes receive higher performance bonus than a professor with a Doctorate degree, because they were given higher rating by their superior? Granting that janitor worked harder but it should not be compared with professors whose job description is totally different from manual labor. The Department of Education (DepEd) must look into this anomaly, if left unchecked will demoralize the teaching staff who spent years to acquire higher education. If this information if again true then education in Zamboanga City is “going to the dogs”.
