KAKAMPI MO ANG BATAS

BY Atty. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…For a child has been born to us, a son has been given to us. He shoulders responsibility and is called… Mighty God, Everlasting Father…” (Isaiah 9:6, the Holy Bible).

THE FEAR THAT MADE GOD ANNOUNCE HIS COMING TO THE WORLD: This is our second column on Biblical narratives focusing on the 18 incidents in the life of Jesus that prove He is God and Savior. We continue to deal here with three incidents which announced the coming of Jesus for the first time. We will now deal in more detail with the first of these three announcements, found in Isaiah 7:14 and 9:2-6.

In Isaiah 7, the story is that there was an invasion that was being planned against King Ahaz and the kingdom of Judah. Two powerful kings plotted that massive invasion. Ahaz and his people got very afraid, which got the attention of God. Apparently, God became furious because of the fear that gripped Ahaz and his constituents, who were supposed to be His believers.

So God called Isaiah and sent him and his son, Shear-Jasub, to talk to Ahaz to tell him not to worry, not to panic. Ahaz however persisted in his fear. So Isaiah asked Ahaz to ask for a sign from God, to prove God will not desert them, or allow them to become victims of the invaders. But in his fear, Ahaz refused even to ask for a sign.

GOD AS A “BABY BOY”: At that point, Isaiah appeared exasperated, and blurted out that it would be God Himself who will give the sign, to assure Ahaz and his people that God will help them. Isaiah then gave the sign: a young woman, a virgin, will conceive and give birth to a baby boy.

This giving of the sign, or prophecy, foretold the coming of Jesus, and was made some 800 or so years before Jesus was finally born. To many, Isaiah’s prophecy meant the coming of a human baby boy—after all, the boy was to be conceived by a human mother, and was to be born from that human mother, too.

But Isaiah clarified who this “baby boy” would really be. In Isaiah 9:2 and 6 of the Bible, this “baby boy” would be a “great light that dawned on a people who have long been walking in darkness”. This “baby boy” actually was not a simple “baby boy”, for He was “Mighty God, Everlasting Father.”

JESUS IS GOD AND SAVIOR, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT: Consequently, what Isaiah foretold 800 years or so before Jesus was born was the coming of God Himself, in human form. God was to come down from heaven, assume human form, and would be called by His very Name, JESUS. There was no uncertainty at all about God coming down to earth by Himself  in Isaiah 9:6, because Isaiah 9:6 categorically said the “baby boy” was “Mighty God, Everlasting Father”.

If it was not God Himself who would come down to earth through human ways—that is, being conceived by a woman, and being born from that woman, too—Isaiah 9:6 would not have flatly stated that the baby boy was Himself the “Mighty God, Everlasting Father.” That would have been blasphemy of the highest order.

That being the case, this first announcement of Jesus’ coming in the Book of Isaiah confirms the fact that He, Jesus, is God and Savior. He is the “great light” who came to His people who, unfortunately, did not receive Him. How about you, my dear readers, did you receive Jesus as your God and Savior? Do so now, and become a Child of God, Blood Kin of the Christ!
