LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body…” (Proverbs 4:20-22, the Holy Bible).

AFFLICTED WITH DIABETES? DON’T DESPAIR: If you are afflicted with diabetes, or an ailment where your blood glucose or blood sugar is high, don’t despair. In 2003, shortly after I was drafted to run as senator by then Sen. Raul Roco for his Aksiyon Demokratiko party in the 2004 elections, I learned I had diabetes mellitus, or Type 2 diabetes, on the prodding of Mike Enriquez, the bossman, then and now, of GMA DZBB 5934 kHz.

Mike saw me in one of my regular broadcasts of the program then known as “Double B Batas ng Bayan” at DZBB, and asked why was I getting thinner. He suggested I go and see his doctor (he is a diabetic, too) by the name of Dr. Mary Ann Lim Abrahan, a world-famous blood glucose specialist. Dr. Abraham confirmed I had Type 2 diabetes.

In April 2015 (or just four months ago, but 12 years since she first diagnosed me as having diabetes), Dr. Abraham warned that my blood sugar count was already 275, way beyond the 162 count for normal blood sugar for a person of my age. She said she would have to start injecting me with insulin, to control my blood sugar.

THANK GOD IN THE NAME OF JESUS, SUGAR DOWN! I asked Dr. Abrahan to defer the insulin injections, for I abhorred getting injected daily. I really did not know then how to bring down my sugar level, but she said I had to go back to her by June 2015 for another check. If there was no improvement in my blood sugar count—meaning, my count would remain high—there would be no other way but to start insulin injections.

By June 2015, I went back to her. By God’s grace and mercy, however, my count went down from 275 to 240. Encouraged by that development, Dr. Abrahan told me she will withhold insulin injections, but juggled the way I was to take my medicines. Then, she asked me to return on August 07, with specific instructions for me to undergo laboratory examinations.

On August 07, though I dreaded seeing her, I went to her just the same. She took my blood pressure, which she said was normal, and then she took my blood sugar count. Then, she asked me, “what did you do?” I counter-asked, “why Doctor?” She said, with a big smile on her face, “your count is now only 141”—which meant a reduction of 134 (!!!) from my 275 count in April. Thank God in the Name of Jesus!

THE WORD OF GOD HEALS, NO DOUBT ABOUT IT: Wow, she said, noting that I also lost one full pound from June to August in my weight. “Amen,” I replied, and told her that there were a lot of things I went through (although not really pushing them hard), but what I remember most was filling my mind with the Word of God by reading one chapter of the Bible every dawn of each day, and praying fervently every time I remember God anytime of the day, especially the prayer in Matthew 6:9-13.

Most especially, I fixed my mind on the assurances of Jeremiah 29:11, Numbers 29:13, Isaiah 40:31, Proverbs 3:1-2 and 7-8, John 3:16, Matthew 6:33 and 7:24-25, and James 5:14-16. All of these verses confirm the love of God for all believers, and the magical healing of the mind and body He extends to those who sincerely listen to His Bible and obey His commands.

Obviously on account of the spiritual guidance of these Biblical verses, I was led to eat raw turmeric and garlic everyday, plus three times a week of fresh vegetable salad and three times a week of oatmeal with nothing but milk and bananas. Of course, I was also guided to continue walking at least 30 minutes three times a week, and Zumba (yes, Zumba) two times a week. Amazing God gives amazing health, indeed, Amen!!!
