Sound Snipings

BY Jimmy Cabato

From all indications, it appears Cong. Celso L. Lobregat is in a fight mode. Unheard of being feisty in his statements of others, in the papers today, he spoke with biting sarcasm.

He was quoted to this effect, “I am glad Mayor Beng Climaco considers me an elder brother,” shooting a question right after, “But does she treat me as such?

He then added, “Has he ever defended me, or lift a finger in defense of me?” narrating soon after a series situations, where Beng allegedly blamed him for supposed wrongs, heaping blames on him for mistakes of her own doing. Right on. The fight is.

After a series of protest actions along EDSA, things are back to routinary motions. Justice Secretary Leila de Lima remains in office inspite of the INC calls for her resignation, spiced by a Malacañang avowal of what seems to be a flaunting statement that she will still uphold the law.

How else would anyone view that poise, if not as a twit on the INC accusations and demands for the head of de Lima? After being seen to have displayed extra special interest in prosecuting the hierarchy of Iglesia ni Cristo, in flagrant sense, de Lima, it said, was “justifiably” going by the rule of law. What audacity!

And Malacañang continues to insist that there were no quid pro quo to appease the powerful Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC or Church of Christ).

After the noticed simmering of the Binays miseries, their woes have resuscitated, as Makati City Hall scam whistleblower Renato Bondal on Tuesday filed with the Office of the Ombudsman two separate graft cases against Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr..

“In the first case, the suspended mayor was impleaded with his sister, Makati 2nd District Rep. Mar-Len Abigail Binay, along with several others in connection with the use of her Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or pork barrel allocation. In the other case, graft and plunder complaints were filed against Mayor Binay and his father, Vice President Jejomar Binay, over the allegedly anomalous deal between University of Makati (UMak) and the Systems Technology Institute (STI). Bondal, a lawyer, alleged that most of Rep. Binay’s PDAF was coursed through the Makati city government.”(TMT)

Gilas Pilipinas has claimed a second win in the 2015 William Jones Cup at the Xinchuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City, Taiwan, when it pulled an 85-71 win over Spartak Primorye-Russia.

This time, it was World Cup veteran Ranidel De Ocampo who top-scored for the Filipnpinos, with 13 points, leading the next top pointer neophyte Terence Romeo by only two points, at 11.

Calvin Abueva, Matt Ganuelas-Rosser and Filipino-Tongan Moala Tautuaa nailed 10 points each and JC Intal added eight, displaying the team’s balance attack.

Gilas Pilipinas unloaded a 15-4 run led by De Ocampo, Ganue¬las-Rosser and Abueva to notch a 13-point lead, 61-48, in the third quarter. Since then, the Filipinos never looked back as they rejected retaliation attempts of the tall Russian side(TMT)

This time, team support was evident, unlike in the bout against South Korea where Romeo sank 23 haymakers and executed high profile moves inside the paint.

It was only yesterday that Budget Sec. Butch Abad sought to be excluded from the graft charges filed versus a former Technological Resource Centger  (TRT) official, to learn that he and President Benigno Aquino III, included  are under investigation regarding the implementation of the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP). This was disclosed by Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales yesterday.

Morales made the disclosure when her office sought the approval of the House Appropriations panel on its proposed P1.7 billion budget for 2016.

It will be recalled, the DAP has been declared illegal by the Supreme Court Morales, prompting official calls for the  investigation of officials behind the implementation of DAP.

And it had to take a query from Rep. Carlos Zarate of Bayan Muna for the Ombudsman to make the disclosure.

The suspicious point is, is there really an on-going investigation, or was the statement a mere lip service for the House panel to look with favor on her office’s request for the approval of their 2016 budget?
