Table Talk

The powerful bomb that exploded inside a bus that had just arrived at a crowded terminal, early afternoon of Friday, injured over 30 passengers and bystanders and killed one innocent girl. Christians and Muslims alike were victims of the explosion. Police reports believe that extortionists and not terrorists did the barbaric act. One,cannot stop asking “what is the difference between extortionist and terrorist?” The harm an injury they caused to innocent people are the same and probably they come from the same group. Terrorists maybe affiliated with radical groups with international connections, either for ideological or religious reasons, but, the possibility that extortionists are members of their group is not nil, because, they operate like terrorists, manufacture and plant bombs with the same materials and alarmingly, they know their target, like, urban terrorists, operating in crowded cities. The fact is, they use the same instrument of death. The Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) or the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) have their “lost command group”, and, these groups, live in their controlled areas.

Biel bus company plying the West Coast of the city, have always been the same victim of bus bombing, many times in the past. Extortion is always the motive, but this reason will only be known to the police and public when a bomb already explodes and caused loss of lives, injuries and destroyed properties. Normally, extortionists send demand letters to their victim. It is surprising why Biel Bus company kept this demand only to themselves instead of reporting it to the proper authorities. This is one angle that the authorities must look into, because there might be some reasons that “more than meets the eye”—  either business competition or family feud, who knows? Everything is possible because criminal minds can employ anything to destroy an enemy.

The recent clash between a contingent of Philippine Marines and members of the PNP assigned in Barangay Labuan, the location of the  main business office of the Biel bus company, has nothing to do with the Friday bombing, contrary to some “rumor mongers” in coffee shops. But nonetheless it has to be looked into by the investigating authorities to stop loose talks that erode the trust of some people on our city  and barangay officials. West Coast is home to our Sardines factories, the biggest in the country and site of the Zambo Ecozone and Freeport, employing hundreds of people. Our local officials and local authorities at all cost must ensure the safety of these business enterprises. They contribute a lot to the revenue of  and employment in the city. For these business enterprises to be the targets of lawlessness may “kill the goose that lay the golden egg” for the city.

Zamboanga City is the melting pot of almost all tribes in Southern Mindanao, The proximity of Zamboanga City to Basilan Province, that is a styronghold of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), where military elements are conducting clearing operations is a “spill-over area”. Zamboanga City that is also home of peaceful citizens is a “rest and relax” (RnR) city of battle weary soldiers and lawless elements. At the tip of the city is Barangay Limpapa and separated only by a river to the municipality of Sibuco, Zamboanga Del Norte said to be a base of the MILF and ASG. Bombings and other lawlessness will come to Zamboanga City because of these unfortunate situation and location. The city’s residents must always be on a “red alert” status and help our city officials and authorities by reporting any suspicious character in our communities. This is the only way to ensure a peaceful city environment. We should not be too dependent on our authorities. They just simply cannot watch almost a million city residents with different directions.

Scoop: The PNP must also send their expert investigators on a crime incident and not those policemen who cannot even spell or write police report correctly. They confuse the readers from who is the culprit from the innocent. Crime scene investigation (CSI) is an important fact in resolving crime cases. Sending someone who cannot even explain a simple crime incident is like inserting a “square peg on a round hole”. Agree or disagree but it is happening.
