Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

In the city council slate, it will be an election of “turncoats”. Right now ,way before the filing of Certificates of Candidacy (COC), some incumbent city councilors and leaders are already doing a “round robin” for membership with a national party they perceived as “the strongest party” or has the biggest “campaign kitty”. Some original party members of Congressman Celso L. Lobregat (Conglo, for short) have already publicly transferred to the Liberal Party of City Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar. The first one to change loyalty is Vice Mayor Iturralde. More councilors and leaders will follow suit, in the coming days before the filing of COC. They will either change to join Liberal Party or go to Conglo’s LDP, Even political leaders in the city are shifting party loyalties. In Table Talk’s survey and talk with leaders in the seven kilometers of the city, more are shifting to Conglo’s group, if he opts to run for City Mayor but more women votes will go to Mayor Beng, the reason is obvious. However, election is still a year away and anything can change, especially now that more and more voters are discouraged with President Pnoy, who is a Liberal Party for mishandling some serious matters in the country and some tactless comments about personalities.

The Nationalist Peoples Coalition (NPC) Party, accepted Senator Grace Poe, to be a party member and she has declared her running for the Presidency. Crisanto dela Cruz (Monsi), who was the first personality to declare that he will run for Congress for the city’s First Congressional District, was also accepted by the NPC as a party member. In Manila and as seen during the last Presidential Election, NPC allegedly supported Pnoy’s candidacy for President, being very popular after his mother’s death, NPC’s Gibo Teodoro lost the Presidency. Both Pnoy and Gibo are close relative to NPC’s Boss, industrialist Danding Cojuanco. In this political scenario, whom will Monsi dela Cruz support for city mayor in the city?  Shall Monsi wait as to whom the NPC will support in Zamboanga City? The region’s NPC big boss is Zamboanga Del  Sur’s  Governor Antonio H. Cerilles. Has Monsi taken the blessings of Gov. Tony Cerilles? These are facts that should be taken into consideration to be a successful politician. As they say “look first before you leap”.

One thing good, Table Talk noticed, is that, most former supporters of Conglo, who left him for personal reasons, are now going back to his camp and are pledging support. These are important developments in a time like today. The big Nuno clan and Perez group of families are with Conglo. In return Conglo will also support Lilia Nuno’s re-election for Congress at the Second District, East Coast of the City. Although Conglo has not yet declared what position he will run for, yet, his body action during interviews clearly show his interest is to go back to City Hall. Mayor Beng already hinted she will seek re-election. This is worth watching.

The University of the Philippines (UP) Law Center published an opinion, that Senator Grace Poe is not only disqualified to run for President because of her citizenship also including her residency in the Philippines. However, she insists in running for  President, because of her high ratings in the SWS survey. However allegations in Manila say that the owner of SWS is a relative of Sen. Grace Poe’s foster father (FPJ) and the survey ratings allegedly are not accurate. NPC should know better, why they accepted her in their party.

Scoop:  The business community in the city is not solidly for Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar, a friend informed Table Talk. They are divided, one group is for Conglo. Since when did businessmen give a solid support to one candidate? They are businessmen, they will support all candidates for City Mayor (they call that insurance),  so that any one who wins, they are still in good hands. Business is business even in elections the businessman always win or else, why be a businessman?  Agree or disagree
