Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

My old man once said that “when a sweet mango fruits ripened, every passers by will throw stones at them”. In politics, this can be a reality. If undefeated politicians are so popular and loved by their constituents for good governance, a political rival will always find some ways and means to demolish their popularity, for their ulterior motives and personal interest to take over. It is a dirty political tactic that will reflect the character of a political contender. In Zamboanga Del Sur, Table Talk’s home province, when election is arriving, most political pretenders do the extreme political preparation by demolishing their strongest opponent or an incumbent through misleading and false information. Many times even old political issues decided favorably by the government and are already in the archives are dug up. These are tactics of dirty “lame duck” politicians who want to resurrect at the expense of the innocent incumbent official.

District 2 incumbent House Representative, Honorable Aurora “Auring” Enerio Cerilles, former Governor of Zamboanga Del Sur, was politically harassed, by publishing anew, a decided graft case by the Sandigan Bayan, clearing Rep. Auring Cerilles of guilt on that graft case many years ago. However, her political opponents, sensing that Rep. Cerilles is a formidable incumbent in District 2, are now demolishing her popularity in her District, before she will file her Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for her re-election.

Nothing can change the truth of the matter, more so, Rep. Auring Cerilles is doing good in her District. She is a strong advocate of women empowerment. Table Talk has noticed her direct involvement in the gender movement in District 2 of Zamboanga Del Sur. She has promoted and supported livelihood projects for housewives. Right now, development in her District is on-going, mostly linking barangays and municipalities by constructing all-weather roads. In agriculture, she is a promoter  of natural fertilizers for “palay” farms and vegetable gardens. She has distributed many farm and garden implements to many barangay folks. Demolishing this truth is impossible.

In health care and protection of the environment, Rep. Auring Cerilles saw to it that municipal officials follow her directives of a clean environment by directly supporting the protection of marine and fresh water resources. She saw to it, that Barangay Health Centers are supplied with medicines for common sickness and emergency equipment like a space for “lying in” patients in Health Centers. In my barangay of Maruing in the municipality of Lapuyan, for the first time pregnant women are mandated to have pre-natal check ups and that they deliver their babies in the health center. These are developments that ordinary constituents welcome and to destroy those programs for political purposes with ulterior motives is denying rural folks of government assistance. The real bane of society.

Table Talk has a small inherited farm in Barangay Maruing, Lapuyan, Zamboanga Del Sur and for the first time my travel for my farm visit  made easier and convenient because Rep. Auring Cerilles with the able and valuable support of the provincial government under Governor Antonio “Tony” H. Cerilles, a coastal highway was constructed passing Barangay Maruing going to the rest of the Baganyan Peninsula municipalities which is the :”heartland” of the Baganyan.

Scoop: Let us not play politics at these hard times. Development is on the go, let it not be disturbed by political opponents to halt the momentum of development. Do and show your best and convince your constituency because “the truth will always prevail”. Envy is the poison of life. Agree or disagree.
