Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

At the rate Cong. Lobregat and Mayor Beng are handling their political pronouncement, it is as if both are hiding their aces, like a game of “poker”.  It is surprising to note that both are using the public to clamor for a status quo, but they are doing the opposite. Some three weeks ago, Mayor Beng decided publicly that she will seek re-election without revealing her council slate. Not even the new Liberal Party member, vice mayor Iturralde, where will she put him, giving wild speculation by the public, that VM Iturralde will either be the LP standatd bearer for the  congress seat in District 2 or make him her Vice Mayor. For the LP council slate, it is also  another guess by pundits in the city.

Congressman Lobregat, on the other hand, said that the people’s consultation he required before saying his intention for 2016, came wth results wherein majority wanthim to run for mayor. However,he did not announce in that presscon that he is running for mayor. Instead he named some of his council slate candidates. This is indeed intriguing.  Why announce lower position and leave some seat vacant. For a possible reconciliation? And why reveal the result of the consultation and at the same time withold your decision? There are things that more than  meet the eye in this scenario, and only Conglo and Mayor Beng know the answers.

“Contra factum non argumentum”. Against a fact there is no argument. It is inevitable and imminent that it will be a “Lobregat versus Cimaco-Salazar” for mayor in Zamboanga on May 2016. All the facts are there, Mayor Beng announced her bid for a re-election but witheld her council slate. On the other hand, Conglo announced some of the bets in his council slate and the result of his people consultation but also witheld his political intentions. It does not need a brilliant analyst  to read between the lines because the difference is the same.

Conglo’s council slate composed of former city councilors who ended their terms  last 2012 and some young and first timer barangay chairmen of vote rich barangays. Perhaps, Mayor Beng will also field council candidates with the same category and it will be a pound per pound come election in 2016.
