LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses…” (Jeremiah 10:3, the Holy Bible).

SORRY CYCLE ON RAINS, FLOODS, AMONG FILIPINOS: In the aftermath of the heavy death toll and awesome property damage brought about by Typhoon Lando, almost everyone is again predictably up in arms against illegal logging and other environmentally-destructive acts, saying the tumultuous rains, fast-rising floods, and devastating winds many experienced during the last few days were directly caused by these acts.

Thanks but no thanks to these reactions, because we know that after everything shall have once again settled down, after the dead shall have been buried, and after the debris shall have been cleared all over again, deadly rains, floods, and strong winds, will once again be forgotten, until the next fierce one comes along one more time.

Indeed, this is the sorry cycle we Filipinos have been accustomed to, since time immemorial, accepting the death and destruction from these rains, floods, and strong winds as some kind of a routine supernatural event over which we have no power to overcome. Sadly, this is a very wrong and, true enough, deadly perception.

WARNINGS ON INEVITABILITY OF RAINS & FLOODS, IGNORED: Please allow me, all over again, to say this: the whole world had already been warned about the inevitability and the deadliness and the destructiveness of these rains, floods, and strong winds. The warning said there will be people who will be destroyed irretrievably with the sure-to-come rains, floods, and strong winds.

We have been told that there is only one way to avoid the death and destruction from these natural calamities (surely, we can not avoid the coming of such rains, floods, and winds as they have, in a way, been mandated to come), but nobody is listening, or would even want to listen.

Mankind instead insisted, through generations, to ignore the warning, and not mind the proffered way to salvation from these disasters. The result? Flooded towns and cities, places buried in landslides, storm surges leveling whole communities, infrastructures twisted and destroyed as if they were mere cardboard boxes, with thousands killed, in a spiraling scope never before experienced, anywhere in the world.

WHY DO WE ALLOW OURSELVES TO SUFFER? So, when will we ever learn? Why should we continue to suffer when we have been told precisely and exactly what we can do to fight off the deadly effects of rains, floods and strong winds? Why can’t we just simply follow the instructions given to us through time and therefore enable all of us to prevail?

In pondering on this thought, I am reminded of the following lament: “Why should you be beaten anymore? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted. From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness—only wounds and welts and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with olive oil.

“Your country is desolate, your cities burned with fire; your fields are being stripped by foreigners right before you, laid waste as when overthrown by strangers… Unless the Lord Almighty had left us some survivors, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah…”
