KAKAMPI MO ANG BATAS

BY Atty. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold…” (Psalm 18:2, the Holy Bible).

SOMETHING BAD TO HAPPEN IN RP DURING APEC? There is something scary in the messages that are being passed around through smartphones and other technologically-savvy gadgets as the Philippines completed its preparation for the Asia Pacific Economic Conference (APEC) 2015 Sunday, November 15, 2015.

The messages are frantically advising Filipinos to stay home, allegedly because of possible violence. For whatever it is worth, here is one such message: “For safety reasons, please take these into consideration: Have a piece of paper of all your contacts in your wallet / pocket (Dad, Mom, siblings, area police and emergency hotlines).

“Be prepared for the worst. It’s hard to accept, but we are in high risk of terrorism during APEC week. Do not go out this coming week. If you have to, be with someone. Do not risk your life for a hangout, especially those who live in the main cities: Manila, Makati, center of Quezon City. Always have load. You don’t know when that call will be handy. Stay calm if anything happens. Pray for the Philippines and the world.”

REPORTS SAY MANILA IS A MAJOR TARGET FOR TERRORISTS: Immediately, Internet groups and groups from various social networking sites were abuzz with messages telling everyone to simply stay at home for the duration of the APEC, from Tuesday, November 17, 2015, to Friday, November 20, 2015. And many appear to be agreeing to stay home.

Well, they could be right. Fact is, one particularly jolting message said terrorists have announced that their next targets major cities in the world, after killing some 130 or so people in Paris, France. Manila, Philippines, our beloved capital city, is listed as one of the major targets.

Nobody knows if these messages are reliable, for the government appeared uninterested to either deny or confirm their veracity. But then, there is really no way for us to know if the threatened attacks are true or not, even if the government denied them, right?

LET US PRAY FOR A SAFE APEC: In fact, there is no way for any Filipino to know whether the threatening messages came from the government itself, as a tactical strategy to keep off Filipinos, particularly those belonging to the so-called leftist organizations, from staging protests to derail a successful APEC meeting.

Whatever, the only sure way to keep everyone safe, for those who believe, is to pray and ask God’s protection, guidance, and benediction, not only for this APEC week, but for the rest of our lives. With or without APEC, our country has become a very dangerous place to live in, what with criminality, drugs, corruption, immorality, and foreign domination, afflicting the nation without let-up.

God is our only refuge, as indicated in Psalm 18:2 of the Bible, which is spelled out in our Life’s Inspiration today. And we are lucky that we believe in God, and in making Him our refuge, because we have something to believe in, and hold on to. Those who do not believe are indeed cursed, for there is no one they can call in their times of trouble.
