KAKAMPI MO ANG BATAS

BY Atty. BATAS MAURICIO

LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “… Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming…”  (Colossians 3:5-6, the Holy Bible).

FILIPINOS, A DISGRACED NATION: There is no denying the truth that Filipinos are now a totally disgraced people with the series of shameful scandals that have hounded them, at least for the last five years under the Aquino government.

The latest proof of this disgrace is the persistent violation of prison laws. Imagine, men and women supposedly undergoing punishment at the national penitentiary are instead treated like they very important personalities!

In fact, many of them live like they were kings and queens, complete with enjoyment coming from drugs and wine, with merry-making instruments and other high-tech gadgets and communication equipment, all under the very noses of prison officials who have become their protectors.

SCANDALS SHAME AND DISGRACE FILIPINOS: And, predictably, after this was exposed, there is the all-too familiar but already-heard talk that remedial measures are being put in place to stop this disgrace, like the installation of closed circuit TV cameras and high nets around the prison walls.

Also, there is talk that prison guards and officials would be suspended or removed, especially those who are known to have developed a disturbing fraternizing attitude with inmates, for one reason or another which, many suspect, had something to do with financial considerations.

But even if this is already highly scandalous, not only among righteous Filipinos but more so among other citizens of the world who can only shake their heads in disgust at the seeming proclivity of our people towards sinfulness, there are far more graver scandals that have also shamed and disgraced all of us as a people, everything of which were predicted to happen by the Bible.

MANY FILIPINOS NO LONGER WITH GOD: How have many Filipinos become so comfortable now with shaming themselves by clear acts of corruption, graft, theft, robbery, and a clear addiction to power, compelling them to do many despicable things just to perpetuate themselves in their elected positions?

The only reason I can think of is this: Filipinos are no longer with God, and are, therefore, by force of consequence, under the spell of God’s enemy, the evil one. While many of our countrymen still profess to be Christians or believers in (or of) God, their faith as such Christians or believers in (or of) God have largely become a faith merely in their lips, no longer in their hearts.

Consequently, there is no solution to the scandals that have been plaguing the country which evidence the lack of godliness of our people, except to bring them back to a more sincere faith in God, by a more compulsory reading of the Christian Bible, and obeying God’s commands—at least, the commands to love God above all else, and to love others as we love ourselves!
