Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

Not only Table Talk but everybody in Zamboanga City is wishing for very peaceful Christmas celebration, amidst  frightening rumors that some lawless suicide bombers are inside the city. The information has rendered the city on full alert and police and military authorities are leaving no “stone unturned” to verify these raw information. Combined police and military patrols are seen in almost all city streets especially oncommercial areas. We hope this will continue until the last day of the Yuletide celebration because the city has already lost so many lives to lawlessness.

One of the weakest points observed in our security system for the city, is, the uncoordinated efforts of our law enforcers and those at the forefront in the barangays, like Barangay Tanods who only take orders from their Barangay Chairmen, who are mostly untrained on security matters. Another observation is the silent competition and seemingly jealousy within the ranks of our military and law enforcers. This malady has disrupted the smooth implementation of security operations in the city, especially against Illegal drugs distribution and smuggling. This is now a matter of back-to-the basics in police work and military discipline. Without these two obstructions, Zamboanga City will be very peaceful, since all elements of the police and the AFP are based regionally in our city.

Our combined team of police and military security teams have gained a headway in curbing petty criminality in most barangays, like street gambling, drag racing, and drug distribution. These are also the main cause of neighborhood thievery and other law violations. Take the case of Datu Taupan St. (Punta Gavilan) in Suterville subdivision. Few months ago, street gambling by trisicad drivers was seen to start very early in the morning until way over midnight and drag racing of motorcycle starts very early in the evening on the streets of Punta Gavilan up to the oil factory of Interco. The noise is terrible and the danger it brings to pedestrians is evident. Today, our combined law enforcers and military elements were able to stop them easily and there is now peace in Suterville subdivision. We hope that this security operations will be sustained until the last violator is punished.

Zamboanga City is overcrowded with people coming from all over the region, either to shop for their Christmas needs or visit relatives. This influx of people is a boon and  bane for Zamboanga. A boon because of revenues but a bane because lawless elements might take the opportunity to enter into the city in the guise of visitors. This is a gargantuan job for our intelligence community, searching for those lawless elements is like “searching for a needle in a haystack”. In this case the barangay officials and tanods can be very useful in detecting for suspicious strangers in their neighborhood. Our law enforcers must have an utmost coordination with all barangays in the city.

Scoop:  Unconfirmed reports in the provinces reveal that Filipino ISIS inspired groups ares now found in some coastal barangays of the Zamboanga Peninsula. Our military and police authorities must immediately confirm this raw information, before they can recruit potential fanatics as members that can cause havoc and destruction in the region. Agree or disagree.
