Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

In the front pages of national news recently stating that the Philippines will launch for the first ever, a weather satellite also to monitor movements in the disputed Spratly group of isles is a welcome news for the country. A satellite or an “eye in the sky” to monitor our surrounding seas and islands is also an “early warning device” against belligerent nations that violate our sovereignty. This will also prove to the world that Filipinos have now the capability to create high technology gadgets which was the monopoly of highly industrialized countries

Filipino inventors have proven that it can compete with the world’s inventors even without the support of the government. One example is the invention of a Filipino woman, who stunned the world with her lamp invention that lights up brightly for hours with water and salt as fuel. It even caught the attention of U.S. President Barrack Obama and even proudly announced the invention when President Obama gave his message during the recently concluded Asia Pacific Economic Council (APEC) conference in the country. It is even rumored that “fluorescent” bulb used all over the world, was allegedly invented by a Filipino, a certain “Mr. Flores”, but the invention was bought by an American Company and had it patented for their company. This alleged Filipino invention hasten the economic development of the world after American Thomas Edison invented the incandescent lamp. There are more Filipino inventions now being used in the country, to mention a few like, in the motor vehicle industry some important gadgets are Filipino inventions. In the kitchen, some utensils making preparation of food easier are Filipino invented. In the computer some electronic chips were invented by Filipinos. These are a few of Filipino ingenuity that contributed to the modernization of the world.

Although the Filipino invented weather tracking satellite called “Diwata 1” will be launched into space with the consortium of Japanese scientist, but Filipino scientists had a big role in the invention. Diwata 1 will counter and monitor China’s aggressive movements in the Spratly group of isles which they converted into all-weather landing fields for their Air Force and huge maritime wharves for their Navy. The expansion of China’s military presence in the South China Sea should be monitored for a safe maritime passage to the Eastern nations for economic survival of Western nations. Asia-Pacific sealanes happen to encompass the South East Asian nations and the Philippines happens to be strategically located in the middle of these sea lanes. We have to monitor China’s military expansionism in the Asia-Pacific area lest the Philippines will be the first nation to fall should the “domino principle” happen in South East Asia.

The recently agreed military pact with the American Armed Forces and the Philippine government known as the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) approved by the Philippine Supreme Court as valid and constitutional, allowing American Armed Forces to use some of the Philippines military facilities will also allow more American military presence in the disputed Philippine Sea and South China sea. China branded the EDCA as “stupid” because it is tantamount to a provocative stand. But whether stupid idea or not, the Philippines needs it for protection against Chinese bullying. Only the Filipino nationalist groups who drove away the Americans from our shores decades ago cannot see the effect of this Communist Chinese military expansionism. And since the Americans cannot protect us forever, the Diwata 1 weather satellite can fill up the vacuum for warning and information, at least we can be warned before any aggression by belligerent countries, will do to the Philippines. We might not win a shooting war with bigger aggressive nations, but we die or surrender completely informed on what are the consequences because we have our own space satellite.

Perhaps, the next satellite to be invented by our scientist should be launched over Mindanao to monitor the movements of lawless elements who are the “lords of Mindanao jungles” for many decades now and committing havoc and chaos in southern Philippines. This time it should be fully supported by our government.

Scoop: Table Talk wishes to express gratitude to my colleague Felino Santos, author of a book for the Elementary grades, for pointing out a mistake of labeling names in my scoop last Wednesday, where Table Talk inadvertently labelled the horse of Don Quixote as Sancho Panza, actually he is Don Quixote’s “man Friday”, His horse is called “Roscinante” and the donkey that carries their load when traveling is called “Dapple”. Thank you Lino, it is always good to have a veteran writer reading your column, it opens back memories on stories, you read, way back in high school literature subjects.Thank you again Lino and to the rest of my readers. Should you find any mistake in my column, please don’t hesitate to write me to correct literary mistake, I will always appreciate them.
