Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

Courting for the favorable votes of your fellow men should be done decently and not take advantage of their misery. Some candidates uplift the miserable life of a voter by giving him assistance to make his life lighter, like a house and a lot if he is homeless or a livelihood project, to sustain his daily needs. This is honorable and a virtue worth emulating. But, what makes it sinful and in bad taste, is when after your charity, you publish it for the whole world to know. This actuation makes you think and ask, what was your intention in giving? Is it charity or you want publicity? One piece of advice to make people think that your charity is genuine and from the heart, do charity and share, like the brotherhood of Mason’s way, and how they do it, share without fanfare and publicity. The most important thing is, your act of charity is known by God and it pleases Him. Anyway, you shared a material thing that is of the world but charity is always spiritual.

In a few days, it will be “Valentine’s Day”, a day of expressing your love and it can be done in many ways. Candidates share and give, lovers renew their commitments and promises. Couples rekindle their old flame. But, whatever you do on “Valentine’s Day” be a gentleman. When candidates give, do it with sincerity and not let every “Tom, Dick and Harry” know what you have done. If you are lovers and dating your girl, keep your tryst to yourselves and not let all your friends know what you have done to her, you will be embarrassing your loved one throughout her life. Couples should celebrate “Valentine’s Day” with a clean heart and not make the day to remember your bad past and start an argument and “wash your dirty linen” in public or just attended a friend’s “Valentines” celebration just to keep up your social status with the “Joneses”. Expression of love at a time when you have the opportunity to do it, can only be defined on what you feel. Let the “arrow of cupid” hit the mark, nothing less and nothing more.

One love story pocketbook I read when I was a young salesman of a multi-national company with title —  “The best revenge is success” —  has a plot that can happen and true to life incident. It is about a girl who is very materialistic and her love is for the “money”. She was the most beautiful in their class and daughter of a middle class family. She  had a handsome boyfriend, intelligent but coming from a poor family. He cannot afford to wear expensive shirts and wear the same set of clothes. Sometimes, his old shirts he wore are torn but his handsome face compliments the deficiency.  He cannot even afford to buy her beautiful girlfriend gifts for her birthday. One Valentine’s Day, her girlfriend asks him to bring her to a dinner date and sadly he said I have no money, I just spent it for my projects. This was the end of the line for her girlfriend, in anger and frustration, she said, “ find someone as poor as you, not me, you cannot afford my expenses and continued insultingly, a beggar has a better life than you”. “This is the last time you will see me, don’t ever call me and I am breaking up with you right now”. She broke up with her boyfriend on Valentine’s Day and she left him  without a word. The poor boy stood motionless and shed  tears of shame and insults.”

Since it was already graduation day, the poor boy diligently looked for work and the “ book says, one thing good with time, it changes”. After working for many years, the poor boy now owns the big construction company he once worked with. It had multi-million project contracts and had many employees in his payroll. One day he called for a meeting with his staff in a classy restaurant in a mall. After his meeting he decided to have a leisure walk in the mall that he frequents when he was a poor man and dreamed of those expensive shirts displayed in the shelves of the mall. While passing the outdoor snacks area in the mall’s hallway, he met his former girlfriend seated in the coffee shop and recognized him, now looking elegant and rich and very handsome in his expensive shirt, she cannot help but called his name. His former boyfriend stopped and they talked. The former girlfriend said, you look great, what happened you won in some lottery? and she bragged “ I am now married to a man who earns  half a million dollars a year”. All of a sudden, a man greeted him, Good Morning sir, how are you sir! Please have a seat sir. You met my wife? pointing to his former girl friend. While seated, the man said to his wife, his former girlfriend, “this is the man I was telling you, I am now doing a construction project for him” and he continued “ he is the man who told me that he once loved a girl so much, but the girl left him because he has no money”. His wife cannot say anything but shed a tear in her eyes. All of a sudden his former boyfriend stood up and without saying a word walked away. Money is not everything. Talent and intelligence are everything.
