Table Talk

Let us take a short break from writing about current events, politics and other matters that affect our daily lives. Table Talk will now delve on an issue that is of human interest and perhaps an issue that governments worldwide are trying to stop to protect their population from dying early. At the same time governments worldwide are reaping a hefty sum in terms of taxes for its usage and manufacture. Smoking tobacco is a dangerous health hazard though it contibrutes to the government coffers. Smoking tobacco per se is a dangerous vice, health medical books reveal. Death mortality count caused by smoking is comparable or almost equal to the number of deaths caused by accidents. On the darker side of life, economically, considering the high cost of tobacco cigarettes by the pack, smoking is a big chunk of expenditures on your monthly budget. But,surprisingly even the lowest income laborer all the time spares a little amount from his meager earning for cigarettes. Smoking is clearly addicting, that is, if you do not know how to deal with the urge.

When governments worldwide, noticed that smokers are multiplying almost everyday and no amount of warning smokers on the hazard and danger to health cant stop people to smoke a cigarette and cigarette manufacturers are getting richer and richer everyday because cigarette sales is unstoppable. Government imposed a higher tax on cigarette manufacturing and its retail sales. In the Philippines it is called “sin tax” and almost one half of the cost of manufacturing and its sales is the “sin tax”. A good brand of cigarettes with an imported brand name cost 80 pesos per pack today which was only something like 30 pesos before the “sin tax”. The lowest class of cigarette brand sold in “sari-sari” stores, which was lower than 10 pesos per pack before, is now 35 pesos or higher. Cigarette per stick, good brand cost only one peso and fifty centavos now cost five pesos per stick and the lowest class, which was only sold at fifty centavos per stick cost two pesos and fifty centavos per stick. These retail prices are not fixed, they will increase anytime and no “roll back” whatsoever.

Cigarettes per pack is costlier than a kilo of Class A rice sold in our local grocery stores, but smokers continue to buy cigarettes for many reasons. For one, smokers believe that cigarette helps in calming their nervousness and renders smokers a focused concentration on what they are doing. When you are alone “smoking keeps  you company”, a smoker said, especially, if you are made to wait. Smoking they say “is the best deterrent” to foul odors, one reason why garbage collectors, poultry workers and plumbers smoke while doing their jobs. And surprisingly, coffee drinkers say that coffee is taken best while smoking a cigarette.

Surprisingly too, many smokers stopped the vice and many former smokers say, it has its health benefits. They say that they can now breath easily and does not tire early. Their appetite in eating is improved and their whooping cough just stopped and can now sleep better and their capacity to copulate with their partner greatly improved. One former smoker, even bragged, that he has now a happy life. Gone are his exploding tempers and irritability when he forgets to buy cigarettes when he is home, the craving is gone and so with his bad breath.

One good reason why some stop smoking is economic in nature. Their meager income cannot cope with their daily expenses. Without a daily budget for cigarettes, he can now give a bigger “baon” for his high school child and his home today has never experienced to be frantic in looking for rice during cooking time.

Indeed, everything has its good and bad sides. Smoking like drinking alcohol and its effects, benefits and dangers, depend upon the user. It highly depends on the desired effect you want to experience from smoking. What maybe bad to some maybe helpful to others. However there is no substitute on the findings of scientific research against the temporary benefits of reality. Therefore if you can’t quit smoking, minimize them to the barest minimum. If  you are smoking a pack day today, there is nothing wrong if you cut that by over 50 percent and buy by the stick or better still don’t buy cigarettes. Just ask for a stick from a smoking friend. This way you will not stop smoking , you only stop buying cigarettes.

Scoop: Table Talk read a beautiful passage written on a T-Shirt of a non-smoker which says “Smokers don’t grow old because they die young”.  Agree or disagree.
