Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

Table Talk is just an outsider looking in. We have no choice of candidates for the moment, except for the Presidency. In the local political scene, Table Talk is always aware on what is happening. Our friends share their views, experiences and above all their observations, which Table Talk finds interesting to elaborate for the sake of positive change and a friendly suggestion. Some candidates might not be aware of  some of their public actuation, to some it is tactless but to some keen observers, it is an insult or an affront.

As an example is how Monsi Cris dela Cruz, who calls himself servant-leader, treated his distinguished guest and presidential candidate Senator Grace Poe and her entourage, when she recently visited Zamboanga City. My media colleague, photo journalist and friend Allen Abastillas, was shocked on the remarks of Monsi Dela Cruz, when he publicly announced during the meeting with Poe and her group at Lantaka Hotel by the sea, “that the lunch and preparation he prepared was all his personal expenses with no expense whatsoever from Senator Grace Poe, because he welcomes her presence”. What is “hermano” Monsi dela Cruz trying to prove to his invited guest? What message is he trying to tell Presidential aspirant Senator Grace Poe? The statement might be because of Monsi’s eagerness and happiness on the acceptance of Senator Grace Poe’s visit and for him to host the affair but prudence should have been observed, especially when food is served to your guests.

After Senator Grace Poe and her entourage left Zamboanga City, if they took the tactless remark at heart, it could have been devastating for a presidential candidate for a host to announced publicly that he paid for everything with no expense from his guest, knowing that she is aspiring for the highest office of the land that entails huge expenditures in the process. It is not about anything but due respect must have been afforded to his honored guest. The public know that Monsi dela Cruz is a former servant of God and is portraying his candidacy for Congress in the city in the cleanest way and should not have made the presidential aspirant a reason or alibi (true or not) that there is no “money” involved in the affair and the presidential candidate’s visit. Period. Because the obvious will be seen and cannot be hidden. This is a friendly advice from Table Talk, even if the truth hurts sometimes.

Another tactless issue that Table Talk was able to glean from the city’s carpetbaggers, was that during the daring MNLF siege in Zamboanga City, when thousands of city residents in the affected barangays were left homeless and the city government took care of their daily sustenance, through city funds and donations and contributions from local and foreign donors, allegedly, Mayor Maria Isabelle “Beng” Climaco-Salazar’s Executive Assistants were partying, wining and dining at Garden Orchid Hotel. There is nothing wrong to enjoy, if you must, but what is unconscionable is, the Executive Assistants’ Garden Orchid Hotel expenses was allegedly charged to the city government. From what source, Table Talk is not privy but obviously during the MNLF siege, the cash donations and contributions from local and foreign donors run into hundreds of millions of pesos. Is Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar aware of this heartbreaking incident? This is the talk of city hall insiders.

Being  tactless and reckless is supplying  ammunition of  charges for your political detractors. Obviously, political groups against Mayor Beng’s administration and Monsi Dela Cruz camp have accumulated campaign charges because of these unfortunate incidents. Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar might be innocent of these charges but some city hall insiders blame her for coddling and offering “kid’s glove” to her unsympathetic Executive Assistants.  Something must be done, before these “Nero’s will be dancing and winning again when Zamboanga City will be on fire”. The truth will always prevail.

Scoop: How true is these allegations that Monsi dela Cruz, has violated COMELEC Rules for campaigning ahead even before the local campaign period started? How true again that allegedly some Executive Assistants of Mayor Beng Climaco-Sslazar spend their birthday celebrations in resorts outside of Zamboanga City using government vehicles and drivers? Just seeking for the truth, you may agree or disagree.
