Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

In a surprising news release, President S. Benigno Aquino III aired a request for media outlets in the country to be very fair in their reporting/ His Excellency was not referring to any of the government agencies nor the Presidency that are subjected to bias reporting or his administration candidates, but, very obvious, he was referring to his Presidency and his administration candidates, who are made as “whipping boys” of some media outlets and private citizens’ comments in the social media. But these biased comments and reporting are only an offshoot to some media outlets who are noticeably  highly favorable to his Presidency and protector of his administration candidates. It is a fact, that they dominated the media scene and biased from the very beginning of his Presidency and the political campaign period.

Now that the media reaction and people’s comments are highly against his administration and his candidates, that seem to grow in number everyday and almost beyond the control of the administration’s “damage control bureau”. The President is “turning the tables” against some media outlets and requesting them to be “fair” in their reportage. This is a little bit too late for a request. The biased reaction has grown into a “social reaction”

Opposition presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s campaign sorties in Luzon and in the Visayas have never been given a fair reporting by some of Manila’s big TV and radio outlets, because they are allegedly in favor of the administration candidate. Though it is a reality, Duterte’s campaign sorties in the provinces of Luzon and Visayas are jampacked with audience who went on their own to listen to Duterte’s campaign speeches. But Duterte was not even given a fair space in Metro Manila’s news reporting. Without Duterte’s supporters downloading in the social media, the attendance of Duterte’s rallies, the country should have known little on the enthusiasm of the people who watched his political rally.

Some Manila based media outlets specially television networks are being accused by some individuals in the social media as “telling lies” on their reportage. This is happening even as of press time. PNoy’s request as of this time of political campaign is perceived as unreasonable, because in the first place, it was the administration’s biased media that started it from the very beginning of the campaign.

Similarly, PNoy’s request is like the actuation of Beijing, China. When the Philippine government reacted to their blatant aggressive militarization in the West Philippine Sea, when China, grabbed some of the isles in our decades old economic zone and our country asked the help of the America, and, still went further to seek redress with the International Courts for litigation,  Beijing, China is sore and mad at the Philippines. Recently, Japan switched on a listening post of Radars to watch disputed islands of Japan claimed by China in the North Japan Seas and those near Taiwan, China is again mad at Japan for blatant provocation. This is absurd, China does not want to be bullied, they want bullying only by themselves and want it to be their monopoly. O.M.G., what is happening to the world?

Scoop: PNoy must not issue such request for media fairness. He should do it first and that is the best service the President can give this nation of confused people. Agree or disagree.
