Table Talk

In a neighborhood discussion the other night, a hot topic on which is the worst form of election cheating in the country. Some neighbors said,  “vote buying or bribery” some say “dagdag bawas” is the worst. Table Talk says there is more disastrous form of election fraud that can never be detected and punished, the crime of “junking” of candidates.

There is a law against vote buying and bribery. If found “beyond reasonable doubt” the erring candidate is punished by the COMELEC. In “dagdag bawas” although there is no law prohibiting it but victims of this election crime can always protest and COMELEC can always rule for a recount of votes. And the candidate can always compare the original documents of actual votes cast as against the documents listing the number of votes for a candidate. “Dag Dag Bawas” can always be seen if there are discrepancies between the actual votes cast as against the vote count.

Junking of candidates is the worst form of election cheating, because it is absolute and untraceable. There is no COMELEC law or any law of the land that prohibits junking of candidates in favor of a favorite candidate that a political party wanted to win, because junking is a personal matter and a personal decision and beyond the reach of the Penal System of the country. A losing junked candidate can never seek a redress after election because he has no basis for a complaint. The only option and remedy of a losing junked candidate, is to seek another mandate inthe next election. In the Philippines, election comes only after three years and you can seek remedy after waiting for three years. It is an expensive and tiresome process.and the real reason as to why “junked” candidates call it “quits” in politics.

There are many ways to junk a fellow candidate because usually “junking” happens in a political party of a candidate and not on the political opponent’s party. The most popular “junking” strategy is on the sample ballot of an ally candidate or the political party itself. A candidate’s name that wished to be “junked” is not listed in the sample ballot distributed to field leaders by a trusted special group assigned for that purpose. It is always a secret mission to deliver and distribute to field political leaders, the tampered sample ballots and usually it is done almost at the last hour just before election time. This scheme and strategy is very effective in our “patronage politics” . If a candidate is subject for a junking in a political party, you can kiss your ass goodbye to victory.

Another form of “junking” is when a candidate requests his or her relatives to vote only for him and leave the other spaces blank. So if there are 8 candidates vying for an elective position, every vote cast with only your name in the ballot, you are ahead by 7 votes. As an example, if 100 hundred of your relatives and supporters voted only for you, you are leading 700 votes and so on. The bigger the number of voters that voted only for you the bigger your lead. The use of stickers junking a candidate is tiresome and laborious, you have to collect your opponents sample ballots to paste the stickers bearing your name.

Any candidate who believes in a party idea of “walang iwanan” is vulnerable to junking and if a candidate has inadequate manpower and resources, your victory is an “Act of God” because “honesty is the worst policy” in politics. It is at this moment where an honest and sincere party man is subject to political roguery by opportunist shenanigan politicians. Table Talk hopes that “God’s wrath will be upon them” this election for after all God said “vengeance is mine”.

Scoop: Although there is no second place in politics and a candidate will do everything to land in the first place, but, in reality there is no substitute for retaining your friendship. Losing is only one thing in your life but friendship is everything in your life that is priceless.

Incumbent Mayor Maria Isabelle “Beng” Cimaco-Salazar continues to trust the Almighty, many of your former political friends are trying to “junk” you but God is not sleeping. Agree or disagree.
