Table Talk

BY Mike S Apostol

The Commission On Elections (Comelec) has ruled that the campaign period will end on May 7 or two days before election day on May 9. From today, Monday, May 2, candidates have only 4 days left to campaign and after May 7, it will be unlawful to campaign. Have you made a choice whom to vote? Perhaps everybody has already decided except for those who are utterly disgusted on politics that they decided not to vote and stay home. Table Talk is voting in District 1 and I have made my choices from the President,Vice-President and only at least 6 for Senators, Congressman District 1, City Mayor and Vice-Mayor, and only also 6 city councilors for District 1, who Table Talk believes are the most deserving. To fill up the election ballot, just for a personal reason is not a reason at all. Voting comes only once in every three years and a voter has got to use it seriously and wisely.Crossing party lines in voting is the most ideal. Voting for an independent candidate, who is qualified and matured, is the most logical choice, because they are the true independent minded candidate who does not owe allegiance to a party although they highly rely on the “people’s support”.

One of those independent candidates that Table Talk has publicly endorsed and campaigned for is a neophyte in politics but whose experience can help the city of Zamboanga. Table Talk has only one vote but I will solidly give it to Mr. RENE ENRIQUEZ SALAZAR, not only as a friend but for his experiences and maturity. His low profile has gained many supporters among Table Talk’s friends and his qualifications as a former Filipino employee of the U.S Embassy for almost two decades is an asset to the City Government. He is a graduate of the Ateneo De Zamboanga University and has experienced public service at the Congressional Office of Congressman Celso L. Lobregat but resigned after several years for personal reasons.

‘Rene Enriquez Salazar has been working closely with some farmers group in East and West Coasts after his stint with the government service and acts as their adviser because Rene also farms in their family owned farm. He resides with his wife and family at Barangay Tumaga and has an engineer son who works at an offshore oil drilling company somewhere in the Palawan sea. Table Talk remembers one weekend, our Saturday afternoon get together over beer and “chicken piangang” cooked by Romy Quijano and in the company of Rolly Ramos and Rene Enriquez Salazar. When Rene’s cellphone rang, he stood up immediately and left the group because some farmers are in his house and wanted to see him. That is how quick he responds to friends who need his help. Perhaps as a City Councilor he can do more and better for the city and not only his friends.

Members of the Ateneo batch of Rene Enriquez Salazar are grouping themselves in support of his candidacy. Jaime Falcasantos, Monching Quejano, Rolly Ramos and many others have signified their full support for their classmate being an independent candidate, because they believe that Rene Enriquez Salazar will not fail their group once he is given the chance to be a city councilor. They even donated their personal funds for Rene’s campaign materials, because his classmates also believe that Rene Enriquez Salazar can be a good, sincere and honest public servant. Table Talk is not an Atenean but a “wildcat” but almost all my bosom friends are “Eagles flying high”. But Atenean blue blood friend Cising Ledesma adopted Table Talk to their Ateneo High School class 1967 and gave me a blue and white alumni t-shirt which I treasured. My son, Miko, a blue blood Atenean and daughter Michelle also an Atenean were surprised and asked me, why I did not study in Ateneo, I said it is a long story but you have an activist father.

I hope my friend Rene Salazar Enriquez can make it to the City Council and an additional Atenean at the City Council will be  very good for the city, for as long as they live up to that name “Fly high” and don’t indulge in activities that will harm the Ateneo’s name and Zamboanga City. My Ateneo friends will agree on this premise that Rene Enriquez Salazar should always protect his name and friends. Pro Deo Et Patria, Rene Enriquez Salazar.

Scoop: Don’t get me wrong my friends who are also running for the City Council, Table Talk has still five vacant slots in his ballot, I will gladly give that to my deserving friends. My only little support for you, my friends. Please agree this time.
